What Is Affiliate Marketing?

July 4th, 2010

You\’ve probably bought something through an affiliate website without even realizing it, if you\’ve purchased something online. Here\’s a good example.

Mike decides that he needs a new credit card because the interest rates on his current cards are too high. So he goes to the Yahoo! Search Engine and does a search for \”low interest credit cards.\” He finds a site towards the top of the search results that compares several different credit cards. The site is called \”Credit Card Comparison,\” or CCC.

Mike decides that he likes the Discover Card featured on the site. CCC\’s site provides a direct link to Discover\’s site, so Mike clicks on the link and applies for the card.

What actually happened in the above scenario is that Mike landed on an affiliate site when he did a search for a credit card. The affiliate site provided valuable information that Mike wanted and so was redirected to the Discover site, where Mike applied for a card.

Mike didn\’t care that Discover was able to trace what site actually brought him to the their site. Discover was well aware that CCC was the website that directed Mike to them, as they are able to track who does. Discover paid CCC a predetermined fee, maybe like $15, for sending Mike to their site.

This was done because the service was provided to Mike. A comparison of several low interest rates for credit cards is what he was looking. CCC is a successful affiliate marketer because they provide a vauable service. Discover received his business.

The credit card market represents a major opportunity for new affiliates. Credit card companies are so anxious to acquire new customers that they are willing to pay high commissions to affiliatemarketers.

A great example is also learned from American Express, who is willing to pay $100 for each credi card referral. So, doing the math – if you send a very low number of only 5 referrals, you still have the opportunity of making $182,500 just on American Express!

Affiliate Programs – How To Get Approved

March 15th, 2010

Its so frustrating when new affiliate marketers can\’t view or market their product if they are denied access because they don\’t have suffient traffic history on a website. Its a vicious cycle fraught with barriers and frustrations and not allowing any commissions or payouts from their product.

You\’re not alone in this dilemma, so relax and learn about what needs to be done to understand the paradox between affiliate and publishers. Clarify your knowledge to be able to move forward.

Some people refer to affiliates as publishers. This is because the earliest affiliate marketers were \”publishers\” in the sense that they published content about a certain topic, e.g. news, hobbies, etc. In essence, the publishers were publishers before they were affiliates.Advertisers knew the publishers already had a traffic history and a variety of content, so they purchased advertising space from the publishers.

There has been an evolution of affilitate marketing since then, but many advertisers are still old school, expecting the same standards when they accept new affiliates. They come in with the expectation you already have content on your website that matches their needs. This is confusing to some, especially those just starting out. You can make your site more attractive o potential advertisers by doing the following upgrades to your site.

Post articles on your site. There are a lot of free article feeds from article directories, but make sure you leave the resource boxes intact and give proper credit to the author. Post relevant videos about your website from Youtube and other sites. The have an \”embed code\” so cutting and pasting is easy.

Post testimonials about a specific product or service. Use your own or whatever you see others posting online. Lastly, and this is important – see whether the offer is available outside of Commission Junction.

Use your own or what others have posted.
Don\’t give up if you are rejected. It depends on who the advertised is partnered with, so you may be accepted on another network.

Listing the important information on your website like privacy policy, contact information will help too. Having the necessary information as well as these tips should help you get started!
