And what’s the difference between dense soda ash and light soda ash? Is one used for water treatment and the other not?

you might NOT want to use calcite, although its probably ok. since calcite contains Calcium (as Ca2+), it might form insoluble salts (like CaSO4 or Ca2(PO4)2) which could potentially clog the pipes of your feeder system.
think “soap scum.” calcite might form soap scum on/inside your pipes.
otherwise, soda ash (contains sodium as Na+) or potash (contains potassium as K+) should both probably work fine
