Abstract

Media has opened new dimensions in learning. Now education is no longer a constraint for anyone. Media has brought education to the doorstep of each and every individual. All forms of media- the newspaper, radio, television and the internet are equally important in imparting education. As the technology is progressing, the different educational modules are being channeled through certain community access centers like community radio system, televisions, internet, community multi-media centers etc. Media literacy or education does not only mean to be entertained by media but to learn something from it. As a major part of the learning process is concentrated on children, media plays a significant role to satisfy their intellectual curiosity. Children often learn important things through the media, which change their perspective to life. Moreover, radio has now started to enter into the educational sector commonly known as Community Radio System, which indirectly forms the part of e-learning process. Computer-based education has transformed the traditional offerings of distance learning. This medium of education converts the traditional static resources into interactive and interesting online modules for the learners. The primary motive of the Interactive Learning Modules is to create modular interactive learning materials for the development of education and to demonstrate their effectiveness in university curricula as well as industrial training programs. Interactive Learning Modules, which is another form of media, serves the purpose of both the technical and management corporate trainee people along with the people with learning disabilities. The main aim of this article is to focus on the positive effects of media on learning and how different forms of media have contributed to the development of mankind.

Media and learning: New dimensions

Author: Bipasha Chowdhury

Introduction:

Media is everywhere; it has become a part of our daily life. The media plays a dominant role in the learning process. Its impact is vast in shaping the life of an individual. Media has the potential to shape personalities, change the way we perceive and understand the world and our immediate reality. Though we know that all good things have both good and bad effects, likewise, media too have some positive and negative effects. Moreover, we have seen that a large number of people depend on the internet to collect information, read news, listen to music and download movies, play games and also for work. Newspaper, Radio, Television and the internet- all form part of the media and are important in imparting education. Media offers culture, sports, information, entertainment, current affairs and education. Sometimes the impact of media is very high. For example, children love to watch the superheroes and sometimes try to copy their actions while playing. On the other hand, the impact may not be so vast or immediate. It happens gradually as children see and hear certain messages repeatedly. Some of the devastating advertisements include: Fighting and unnecessary quarrel, cigarettes and alcohol being shown as the symbol of heroism, style and attractive, but not deadly and unhealthy. Moreover, violation of laws is shown as a means to gain justice and sexual action with no negative results, such as disease or unintended pregnancy. In recent years, the impact of media on teaching and learning has increased tremendously. New opportunities are being provided to give a techno-touch to the traditional educational process and system. As the society is becoming media-savvy day by day, the educational modules are being channeled through certain community access centers like community radio system, televisions, internet, community multi-media centers etc.

Media and Children:

Media Literacy: “the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and communicate information in a variety of formats.” —David Considine

The role of media in imparting education is increasingly on the rise. Media surrounds us and is present in everything. This phenomenon has made learning easier and interesting for children. Television, radio, and computers are gradually entering classrooms and changing the way of learning. With the onset of new technologies and the emerging trends in the global economy, the present day education is changing. Therefore, there is a need to educate ourselves with the emerging wave of technology. It is well known that by learning to read and write, we can be called literate. Similarly, in the 21st century, by gaining knowledge about the different aspects of media, we can also be called media literate, although there are both positive and negative sides of it. Therefore, as we are adopting the good from it, the bad should be avoided. The negative messages could be avoided by developing the skills of questioning, evaluating and analyzing them. This can be called media literacy or media education.

Media literacy or education does not mean to know about media but to learn something from it. Moreover, we find the subjects that we learn in our curricula are also found in media. They may be related to arts, science, different languages, social sciences and health. It also helps to develop critical thinking skills. The students can get a vast exposure to the pop-cultural references. They can get statistics and data from the news, which can be the basis for math and science learning. The teachers can also incorporate media analysis whenever the Internet, television or video are used in the classroom.

The impact of media is vast on children and even on the adults. The intellectual curiosity of a child is satisfied by media literacy. At present, in order to exist in the competitive market, there is always a need to equip oneself with better knowledge and analytical skill. Apart from books, television also helps to improve the Intelligent Quotient and General Knowledge of every section of the society, particularly the children. Media education skills develop the children’s thinking and analyzing power, which in turn, inspires them to make queries and think about the media messages they watch, hear and read. As a child tries to critically analyze the things he reads, likewise he tries to do the same with sounds, actions, moving pictures etc. There are numerous benefits of media on children. The first and foremost effect of media is definitely the accumulation of General knowledge, different dialects and cultures. Television boosts the social awareness of a child to a great extent. Sports channels develop the logical mindset of a child. Cartoon channels keep the children happy. News channels increase the vocabulary of the children and inform them about the positive and negative impacts on the society. It increases the concentration and retention power of a child, which benefits their studies to a great extent.

There are also negative effects of media on children. Children often learn certain things, which change their perspective towards life. For example, if they watch violent scenes on TV, their nature tends to be the same. There are many incidents where children try to imitate the super heroes and it results in death. Studies often get hampered and lapse of concentration occurs due to excessive watching of television. The advertisements shown in the media often captures the mood of the individuals. Generally, girls are very vulnerable and sensitive about their physical image. When an adolescent girl watches the ads that show unless we buy a product or carry the style statement or wash our hair with a specific shampoo and look smart like a slim model, we don’t get respect in the society or get a job. These messages attack our self-esteem and create a negative impact on a child. Two Studies conducted by the South Australia’s Flinders University have revealed that “television advertising featuring idealised thinness negatively affected both the mood and the body image of adolescent girls, with those in the 13 – 15 year age group being more affected”.

On the whole, media has made a tremendous impact on children. Compared to the positive impact, the negative impact is too negligible. The craze of media is such that no one can escape its vibe-be it the adult or youth.

Effect of Community Radio on Education:

Radio has now started to enter into the education sector with the name of Community Radio System. The term Community Radio signifies radio broadcasting with the objective of serving the community by involving members of the community in the broadcast of their programmes. It will help the students to hone their public speaking skills. Though the concept of teaching through radio or television is quite new, but some media or production companies have come forward with such kind of proposals.

Certain questions may crop up about the validity of the relation between radio and learning. The readers may also ask whether the community radio is performing any tasks of e-Learning. If learning is universal and ‘e’ is used for ‘electronic’, then why can’t the verbal knowledge spread through electronic media like community radio as a part of ‘e-Learning’? The advantage of a community radio is that any listener within the range of five to ten kilometers can tune in the radio channel. Community radio is helpful enough for people of the poor and developing countries and even for people living in rural areas without basic amenities like electricity, satellite television, internet etc.

In India, the non-commercial organizations were not allowed to run radio stations. The private organizations with good financial background like Radio Mirchi, Red FM, Big FM, Radio city and educational institutions only get broadcasting licenses. This distinction is little reduced with the Cabinet decision. This move has triggered modest celebrations among a number of community radio, NGOs and broadcast professionals. A number of broadcasting organizations have moved forward to introduce community radio in schools and colleges. With the introduction of this technology, quite a few civil society organizations have come forward to broadcast their educative radio programming over AIR.

Webel Mediatronics, a profit making company, engaged in the development, manufacturing and in the areas of Studio and Broadcasting Systems, Industrial Electronics, Information Technology Applications and various systems for the disabled has come up with the idea of introducing radio in schools. It has already given offers to two schools-Heritage school and GD Birla Center for Education. If the offer is accepted, Webel feels, the radio system can make teenagers conversant with public speaking. According to Gautam Burman, Chief Executive Officer of Webel Mediatronics, “Schools feel that perfection in public speaking can only be achieved through practice. The community radio system will give students the opportunity to develop their communication skills and expand their knowledge base”.

This community radio can also help to organize counseling sessions, prior to any board or entrance examinations. Moreover, this kind of radio will help students to revise their classroom teaching, which they may forget. The health and hygiene issues can be addressed; lifestyle problems can also be solved though these programmes and even an awareness campaign by experts on HIV/AIDS can be transmitted. CRS can also help to notify parents about important announcements of schools. Burman added that “Often after exams, students seek informations in scholarships and admissions in other universities or courses. All such queries can be clarified through community radio. Eminent educationists can be invited to the studio to deliver lectures. Radio browsing will soon become popular among Gen Y”. Any listener within the range of five to ten kilometers can tune into the radio channel of the schools. It can also familiarize the local students with the similar syllabus of the other schools. There are schools that have allocated a budget of Rs.1 crore for students’ development programmes in the next few years by incorporating Radio programmes.

The impact of community radio is massive and its impact is felt on every section of the society. With the passage of time everyone has learnt to acknowledge its positive impact on individuals.

Effects of Media Boom on distance education:

Distance education is often defined as “institution-based, formal education where the learning group is separate, and where interactive telecommunications systems are used to connect learners, resources, and instructors” (Schlosser and Simonson, 2002).

The original distance education by correspondence has been upgraded by twenty-first century technology. Distance education has vastly benefited from the media boom with telecasts and broadcasts limiting the dependence on the written word. In the past, distance education was primarily delivered through mail and was called correspondence courses. The medium of instruction was mainly through books, paper documents and other printed materials. Contrary to classroom learning, instructions provided by professors or teachers were delivered in print to the learners who didn’t have the opportunity to have interactive classes. Queries and notes were interchanged between teachers and students and vice versa. But now the trend is fully replaced by colourful computer-based graphic resources. Computer-based education has changed the traditional offerings of correspondence education. This medium of education converts the traditional static resources into interactive and interesting online modules for the learners. Moreover, online-learning retains most of the characteristics of the classical form of distance learning, while offering more sophisticated learning materials at a much reduced rate.

At present, the concept of distance education with the help of media has gained wide popularity. The media boom with telecasts and broadcasts has to a large extent limited the dependence on the written word. Moreover, with the emergence of the Internet as a global media, the concept of distance learning has been revolutionized. From the age old days, distance learning was mainly provided through correspondence. But the introduction of the internet has changed the concept of distance learning to a great extent. At present, distance learning programmes are increasingly being delivered through computer technologies but the traditional media is not totally obsolete as it helps in effective learning. We can define quality online education as a people-oriented, instructor-led activity, where the level of communication should be comparable with on-campus education. Due to the connectivity of the internet, distance education is often called online learning because the Internet-connected computers bring the teacher and learner face to face, which substitutes/replaces classroom learning. Moreover, the Internet has also facilitated the students to study online from any location and at any convenient time.

There are numerous factors which have contributed to the increasing popularity of the distance education through media. With the introduction of online learning in universities, distance learning has gained immense importance. Online learning has assumed the role of an important media for imparting distance education. It also went to the extent of providing quality online courses which have become almost comparable to the traditional classroom learning. Now students can get access to a broad spectrum of disciplines from any location. With the mingling of online learning and distance education, education is no longer a constraint for any class of the society.

Distance education can also be termed as Interactive Telecommunications system. Interactive telecommunications systems broadly mean that the instructors and the learners use a variety of technological resources while teaching and learning from a distance. Now-a-days, many universities have come up with the idea of transferring its on-campus learning into online learning.

Now-a-days, we see an excessive use of media in education. Media has made its presence felt everywhere, be it by television, radio or computers, the most popular medium of imparting education. Unlike the past, education and examination is no longer monotonous. With the introduction of media, education has assumed a different role. Now-a-days, we can see that before the board exams or any competitive exams, different medias like television, radio etc. come out with different education-related programmes to help students to deal with their study materials. These media channels rope in different intellectuals, professors and teachers of different institutions to guide the students with their valuable suggestions and give them necessary moral boost to cope up with their burden of studies.

The most important advantage of online distance education is to earn a degree from one’s home or workplace. In traditional distance learning, interaction is limited to a certain point and feedback from the other side is often delayed because of slow postal systems. It has helped a large number of people to pursue education, who don’t even have the time to enroll for regular courses. Moreover, it is usually easier and less competitive to obtain admission for the online courses. Moreover, in case of online distance courses, learning is more fun and interactive. It is also flexible. It is possible to incorporate charts, maps, graphs, moving images, slides, video clippings and even audio recordings with the course material. It helps to understand the entire syllabus without the help of a teacher. The students are able to interact with their peers through online class projects, e-mails and also with the help of online conferencing. This interaction with the help of media using e-mail, conference calls and chat makes learning easier and entertaining. It substitutes the face-to-face experiences of traditional learning. The availability of online libraries with their huge collection of books has also made the learning process easier and worthwhile. Speaking about the economic side of online distance learning, it is seen that most of the time, the expense of a regular course is much higher than the online courses. The media-related online distance learning is relatively economical than the traditional class-room learning. Nevertheless, keeping in mind its positive effects on individuals, these computer-based distance education continues to grow.

Role of Interactive Learning Module in Education:

Interactive Learning module is another form of online distance education. The main idea of interactive learning is to provide educational guide through on-line education. In this module, support learning is available on a 24/7 clock and delivered from class-room to anywhere and at anytime. The Interactive Learning module generally engages the learner and the teacher in effective instructional communication without disturbing the interaction. Interactive learning modules developed by corporate media companies are becoming increasingly popular. Now-a-days, the Interactive Learning Module materials are used in management courses, undergraduate and graduate engineering courses, as well as technical and management corporate training programs. The prime aim of the Interactive Learning Modules is to create modular interactive learning materials for the development of education and to demonstrate their effectiveness in university curricula as well as industrial training programs. Thus, the acquaintance of knowledge is maximized through the advent of Interactive Learning Module.

Now-a-days, we have seen that interactive learning modules developed by different corporate media companies are becoming increasingly popular. Witnessing the importance of Internet, innumerable training players are offering their training online. These modules are helpful to provide value-added services and equip professionals to work in a dynamic and competitive environment. Interactive design tools help the learners to explore the activities of product development and emphasize on the integration of design, manufacturing and marketing concepts. Moreover, interactive learning provides solutions for evaluating and monitoring of the learner’s progress.

Like most of the media houses, ZEE has also come up with the concept of online education, which they named as ZEE Interactive Learning Systems (ZILS). ZILS generally provides its online courses through a Learning Management System. According to Rajendra Raju, executive vice president, corporate services of ZEE Interactive Learning Systems, “this offering not only facilitates in Synchronous and Asynchronous learning but also provides Customized Training Solutions based on individual needs and access to rich resources and expert support”. Apart from ZEE, another company which came forward for making faster its training market is Xansa Websity (formerly known as IIS Websity). It planned to focus on the corporate IT training market through its Learning Management System called the ‘Quality Learning System’ (QLS). Apart from ZEE and Xansa, Oracle also thought of introducing an e-learning methodology for its existing and future courses through the Oracle Learning Network (OLN). According to SV Krishna, head-Asia Pacific division, Oracle OU, “The purpose is to disseminate information anytime, anywhere and help in providing to those who are really in need of it. On OLN, one is learning from Oracle and with Oracle. The corporates can choose their specialized module, rather than undertaking the whole course. And the whole offering becomes more customized”.

Interactive Learning Modules are designed not only for the technical and management corporate trainee people but also for the people with learning disabilities. With the advent of technology, physical barriers are no longer a constraint for leading a normal life. Technology can abate any learning disabilities. It can also make learning accessible for the people with disabilities. Interactive Learning Modules are particularly helpful to people with learning disabilities.

With the transformation of a new era, we have seen that the concept of E-learning, supported by the web-based learning environments. This could help people with learning disabilities or social difficulties to adjust with normal contemporary life and knowledge-based curricula. Till now, the society and the media have not thought about the impact of computers on the lives of the disabled in general and the visually-challenged in specific. Special schools were built for their education. But the federal ‘Individuals with Disabilities Education Act’ (IDEA) made it mandatory for the schools to educate children with disabilities in general classrooms.

The Interactive Learning Guide for the disabled, coupled with the application of technology in education provides better understanding of theories, their applications and identification of alternate solutions for them. This advanced type of learning for the disabled has helped them to get over their weaknesses and start a new life afresh with better knowledge as their strength. A teacher, principal, specialist or a paraprofessional can help a child with learning disability to achieve full potential by helping them to adapt the online interactive education guide. Therefore, education is no longer restricted to the normal persons, but it has crossed the barriers and enlightened the life of every individual irrespective of their disability.

From the above inferences, we can rightly conclude that the effect of media is vast on the life of each and every individual. With the on-going development of information and technology in the society, media has given particular attention to the need of education and cultural diversity and promoted media consciousness among individuals. Media has entered in every sections of our daily life- be it in education, news, entertainment, culture, sports, etc. Last but not the least, media has opened a new dimension and gave a new meaning to education. Education has become more entertaining like never before.

There is a product, Hydrolyze Under Eye Treatment, that caught my eye one day while reading a beauty magazine. I am one of those women who has to deal with dark circles under the eyes. I’d like to blame my kids and my hectic schedule, and the fact that I’m a single mom, but the truth is, it seems that it’s more genetic than anything. I dealt with these as early as college, way back when, which was a time that was definitely filled with sleep.

What Social Media Marketing Can Do for Your Business

Social Media Marketing, which is also known as Social Influence Marketing, is the method of using social influencers, social media platforms, and online communities for marketing, public relations, and customer service. Some of the more common social media marketing tools include Twitter, blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube. One of the major benefits of advertising on a social networking site is that advertisers can leverage the users’ demographics and target their ads appropriately.

In terms of Internet marketing, Social Media refers to a collective group of web properties whose content is mostly published by Internet users, not direct employees of the property (ie, the vast majority of videos on YouTube are published by non-YouTube employees).

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a series of methods that generate publicity through social media, online communities, and community websites. Social media marketing has two important aspects:

(1) Adding links to services so that their pages can be easily saved and submitted to and for those services.

(2) Building brand or company methods that visitors can promote themselves in multiple online social media venues.

The guidelines of Social Media Marketing are not easy to define. Because the concept is still so new, many bloggers, as well as public relations experts, marketers, and social media experts, don’t always agree on their definition of what Social Media Marketing involves. Quantitative results from social media remain hard to measure.

Companies can count page views and compare the number of positive vs negative comments. Sometimes, consumer feedback can influence an important decision. Online social networks started as digital gathering places where people could communicate with each other. Currently, companies are using social media more and more, hoping to sell their products and services or get their message out where consumers are constant visitors.

Blogs and social networks comprise an emerging social web. The social web includes social media sites and it is a place where social media marketing can occur. It’s not just the technologically savvy brands that have pages on Facebook, post videos on YouTube, and exchange short messages with consumers on Twitter. Long-established companies that are used to traditional forms of marketing and advertising are also experimenting. Companies that now embrace the idea of communicating directly with the consumer find that consumers respond positively to that kind of personal contact. The potential for your business to grow exponentially is very real.

As Internet usage continues to grow in other parts of the world and social networks continue to proliferate, advertising dollars on social networking sites outside of the US will begin to play a major role as well.

Social Media Marketing as a Selling Tool

What is one of the most valuable and credible selling tools that you can use? The most credible tool that you can use when considering whether to buy a product or service is word of mouth. Other people who have had personal experience with those products and/or services will be your most reliable and credible source for advice. This applies to both online and offline buying; those who use online social networks are three times more likely to trust the opinion of others in their network than traditional advertising when it comes down to making a decision about a purchase.

How does that apply to you and your business? Social Media Marketing is the latest trend in the word-of-mouth marketing arena and optimizing your Social Media Marketing strategy lets you leverage your own unique content, along with social media tools and sites, to communicate important information within your area of expertise. This concept, especially in combination with search engine optimization (SEO), is an extremely effective tool that drives valuable traffic to your website. Social media marketing uses fresh content and tools such as news, social bookmarking, social networking, content tagging, and other interactive social websites to create brand awareness, establish thought leadership, increase qualified website traffic(which, combined with SEO and information architecture, can help increase your lead generation), and develop a community.

Implementing a successful and effective social media marketing strategy requires an understanding of the subject and available tools, a well thought-out plan, and experience in driving traffic through the use of the content. If all of those are part of your formula, your business is bound to succeed.

A marketer’s perspective-

Well, Business is marketing, as the business gets more and more challenging in today’s global world and dynamic markets, marketing is also becoming more complex, the process called marketing has been changing, getting new dimensions and the process is becoming more challenging than ever before. Marketing is challenging, so is promotion, an important ‘p’ of the marketing mix. There are a set of promotional tools used by companies worldwide to promote products and services. A new addition to this set of promotional tool kits is social media.

There have been a lot of debates going on about social media and its influence over consumers. A few sections call it a revolution, which is going to play a vital role in the modern world, and advocate that it will influence the consumer perceptions and ultimately the buying process. On the other side, a few sections call it hype, a fad. Let’s analyze both the arguments to come to a conclusion.

A recent compilation made by socialnomics.com from various sources has revealed some stunning facts about social media which most of us would have never imagined. Well, I do not want to show the full compilation; (readers can refer the site for complete details). Here are a few compelling facts. 96% of millennial have joined a social group network. Face book tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S. Social media has overtaken pornography as the no.1 activity on the web. Facebook added over 200 million users in less than a year. iPod application downloads hit 1 billion in 9 months.

If facebook were a country it would be the world’s 3rd largest. 80% of companies use social media for recruitment. Some universities have stopped distributing e-mail accounts; instead they are distributing eReaders, ipads, Tablets. What happens in Las Vegas stays on facebook, twitter, kohtakte, flickr, you tube. 39% of bloggers post opinions about products & brands. 24 of 25 largest Newspapers are experiencing record decline in circulation. 60 million status updates happen on facebook daily.

There is absolutely no denying the fact that social media has gained a significant amount of popularity among the consumers around the world. What social media has accomplished over the years is that, it has successfully connected consumers all around the world; today consumers are in a better position to discuss about products and services, exchange information and ideas. Today consumers are well informed than ever before. A person can get reviews from people about a product or service within no time through social media conversations and contacts. Consumers are in a position to make better choices. As Eric Qualman, socialnomics.com says ‘we don’t have a choice on whether we do social media; the question is how well we do it’. But in spite of all the facts and figures that show the importance of it. Is it appropriate to call it a revolution? That is the central point of discussion.

Definitely not, say a few sections, calling it hype. According to a report from online researchers Knowledge networks titled ‘How people use social media’ which suggests that it’s effect on the population, is vastly overrated. Though its popularity is high, with 83% of the online population now using it in some form and half of the online population doing so on a regular basis, reports MarketingVOX.

Despite its popularity, social network platforms like facebook, twitter and other similar social networks have failed to demonstrate prowess as marketing tools and possibly never will, says the report. Knowledge networks ranked the value of social media advertising at the bottom of the ranking, below word of mouth recommendations and TV advertising.

Further the report says, it can most likely influence the consumption of media-related products and services like books, movies, TV shows and music. Less than 5% of the social media users regularly visit such networks for guidance on purchase decisions and only 16% say they are more likely to buy products and services after seeing ads on social sites. Social media users mostly not turning to it for marketing purposes or to find product information but to connect with friends and other people says SVP-group Account Director Dave Tice. According Tice, only 1% of the population ever used Twitter. It is still a minor part of the media and personal mix that consumers use to make decisions concludes knowledge networks.

So, finally, is it a revolution or hype? Well, the emergence of social media is a very recent phenomenon, there is no doubt it has gained so much popularity and wide acceptance within a short period of time, which itself is a landmark in the history of mankind, moreover they involve people, that is it’s the biggest strength, marketers go where people go, involve themselves wherever people are involved, in short, marketing is people centered, in that case a platform like social media where millions of people meet, discuss and exchange ideas, thoughts and information, would definitely attract marketers, and looking at its popularity , it is definitely not a hype, rather I would say, it is in the growth phase and still to go a long way to take the place of other powerful promotional tools existing today. Undoubtedly, social media is one of the powerful promotional tools which will influence business, people and markets across the world in the future.

Is it a revolution? I don’t think so, it is gaining popularity day by day, it is the current trend, and the trend will not be short lived, because it is in its growth phase and gaining importance and will go a long way, now, what seems to be just social platform for friendship and social connect, will one day serve as a platform for people to discuss anything and everything, politics, business, technology, products, services, of course all kinds of discussions take place today, the same will happen tomorrow in a large scale. A time will come when people will ask review from people from all over world through social network before purchasing goods and services, but revolution is really a big word, and not suitable to refer social media at least at this point of time.

How marketers use social media does matter, social media, having the number of users and popularity it enjoys today, it is definitely one of the most powerful promotional tools, but, one needs to understand that it is a promotional tool, if you think it can drive sales and help you earn profits within a short period of time like other promotional tools like Advertisements, direct marketing, sales promotion, Public Relations and publicity, then you are making a mistake. Social media is a tool for long term promotions, it helps you to connect with people, create brand awareness, provide product and service information, change consumer perceptions regarding your brand, helps you inform the consumers about your new launches and create a buzz about it. It is more like a communication plus promotional tool, which can definitely bring you long term benefits and don’t forget, it is the cheapest promotional tool out of all the tools used by marketers today. Social media is neither hype nor a revolution, it is a fantastic platform where millions of people meet each other, if your products and services are for humans, and then you ought to be a part of social media.

Is Social Media a Revolution or Hype?

There have been a lot of debates going on about social media and its influence over consumers. A few sections call it a revolution, which is going to play a vital role in the modern world, and advocate social media will influence the consumer perceptions and ultimately the buying process. On the other side, a few sections call it hype, a fad. Let’s analyze both the arguments to come to a conclusion.

Digital Video and FireWire
There are two major types of camcorders: analog and digital. Analog camcorders record the picture information to tape as a series of waves and electronic pulses. Digital camcorders translate the video into a computer-like signal, and then record it to tape. An analog camcorder is like a typewriter, while a digital camcorder is like a computer. The benefits of a digital camcorder are that the quality is higher, and no tape quality is lost when you make a copy digitally. Editing is also much easier with a digital camcorder than it is with an analog camcorder. Digital camcorders used to cost upwards of $2,000, but now many models are available as low as $300. Manufacturers are stopping production of analog camcorders altogether.

As almost all consumer camcorders right now record to digital video, it’s necessary that your camcorder is capable of making good transfers of digital data to the Dell vostro a860 Battery computer or other digital recorders. This is done through FireWire, another name for the IEEE 1394 high performance serial bus. Most consumer camcorders have FireWire ports that allow camcorders to be routed to a computer to transfer data. Because FireWire can transport more data at higher speeds than a USB cable can, it is nice to use while editing video in programs. FireWire is standard on camcorders today. It is important, however, to verify that your computer has a FireWire jack.

CCDs: Size and Pixels
CCD is short for charge-couple-device, and is often referred to as a “chip.” The chip converts visible light into an electronic signal, which the camcorder reads and stores to tape. Generally, the bigger the CCD the better; broadcast camcorders often have 1/2-inch to 2/3-inch CCDs, while consumer camcorders usually have them within the window of 1/6-inch to 1/3-inch. The larger the CCD, the more light is taken in with the image, resulting in brighter pictures with better colors. CCD size becomes quite important in low light situations. CCD sizes in consumer camcorders vary with every model and manufacturer, and always should be considered. The difference between a 1/6-in. and a 1/4-in. CCD may seem small, but when those values are squared to measure the surface area, it has a large effect on video and low-light quality.

The other key distinction is the difference between one and three CCDs. Professional camcorders always have three CCDs, one for each primary color. Until 2002, consumer camcorders typically only had one. The colors on professional three-CCD camcorders are much brighter, vivid, lifelike, and accurate than the colors of one-CCD camcorders. A three-CCD camcorder almost always beats out a one-CCD camcorder, and the difference in quality both in normal and low-light shooting is noticeable. The best part is that three-CCD camcorders are beginning to make their way into the consumer market. Whereas three-CCD technology previously could not be found for under $2,000, there are now three-CCD camcorders available for below $1,000, and prices are dropping every day.

Another thing to consider is the number of pixels on the CCD. The more pixels the CCD has, the sharper the image; however, this is slightly deceptive. A standard video frame has only around 340,000 pixels in it. Increased pixels have very little effect on the sharpness of the image once they exceed 340,000. Of course, video could never be that simple, and you will typically see sharper images even between 1 Megapixel and 2 Megapixel CCDs. However, this effect is subject to diminishing returns. It should also be noted that there are two measurements for CCD pixels: gross, which is the total number of pixels on the CCD, and effective, which is the number actually used on the CCD. The effective pixel count is what matters.

Zoom
Zoom can be classified as either optical or digital, and almost all camcorders have both. Normal optical zooms range from 2x to 20x magnification, while digital zooms range from 20x to 800x. While optical zooms use physical movement of the lens mechanism, digital “zoom” is simply digital enlargement of the pixels. Digital zooms result in a blurring of your picture called pixellation. Using a digital zoom will significantly reduce the quality of your video, and we always recommend turning your digital zoom off. We also recommend that consumers just ignore the digital zoom of any camcorder, because it is largely marketing hype and not a quality feature. Manufacturers will boast outrageously large digital zooms of 500x or 800x, which might look impressive on paper. If you were to actually use these zooms, however, your video would be unwatchable.

Media: Tape, Flash, or DVD
Currently, there are three major types of camcorder media: tape, DVD, and flash. (There are both analog and digital media, but we at Camcorderinfo.com concentrate on the digital ones.) These days, most camcorders record to MiniDV digital videotape. A second digital tape format, Digital8, was invented by Sony.

It is important to note that digital stills are not recorded to tape, but to Flash media, just as with digital still cameras. Different types of flash media are used by different manufacturers, including SD, Compact Flash, and Sony’s Memory Stick and Memory Stick Duo. A very small number of camcorders include no tape or DVD mechanism and can record video only to a flash media card. These flash media camcorders are just starting out and haven’t really caught on.

DVD-recording camcorders have become very popular in the past few years. DVD-recording camcorders record video on smaller-sized DVDs. DVD-recording can cause some confusion, though, because there are a few different flavors of DVD media, each with its own benefits.

There are three types of DVD formats that camcorders use: DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM. These formats are somewhat similar to burnable CDs. DVD-R media cannot be erased once recorded. One of the benefits of a DVD camcorder is that it allows you to do in-camera editing. You can delete scenes, move them around, and even trim them in some models. This is possible only with DVD-RW and DVD-RAM disks. The downside to these two formats is that not all home DVD players can play DVD-RW or DVD-RAM disks. On the other side, most home DVD players (except some of the earliest) can play DVD-R disks.

Image Stabilization
Image stabilization is an important factor in performance, especially if you’re not using a tripod. Image stabilization removes some of the shakiness that occurs when you are handing a camcorder. There are two types of image stabilization: optical and electronic. Electronic image stabilization uses the camcorder’s internal computer to electronically shift the image in the opposite direction that minor shakes move it. It does this by slightly zooming in on the image, which gives the camcorder a little “wiggle” room. Optical image stabilization follows the same concept, but the camcorder actually moves parts of the lens to compensate for the shake. The downside to electronic image stabilization is that it sometimes degrades picture quality. Optical image stabilization is better than Electronic stabilization, just as optical zoom is better than digital zoom. Unfortunately, most consumer camcorders have electronic image stabilization.

Audio
In some ways, the audio you record with your camcorder is just as vital as the video. However, this isn’t likely to be a make-or-break area in your camcorder buying decision. Most camcorders are generally equal in the audio that their attached microphones record – equally bad, that. There are often problems with tape motor noise, problems from noise from your hands operating the camcorder… and sometimes the camcorder will simply record the wrong thing. When looking at the audio component of your camcorder purchase, look for options. We recommend using an external microphone instead of the one that is included with the camcorder, so you must look for a microphone-in jack. It is also good to have a headphone-out jack so you can monitor your audio and correct for any problems while recording. In addition, some higher-end and some middle-tier consumer camcorders include manual audio control, which allows the user to adjust the audio level of the microphone’s channels; this is important when recording something like a concert, or anything very loud or soft.

Still Pictures
Still picture quality is rated in pixels, usually advertised as a number of Megapixels. For many years now, camcorder manufacturers have been integrating still picture functionality into their camcorders. However, as we said above, your best move is to buy a separate camcorder and FUJIFILM NP-40 camera. If you are placing value on still pictures (which many consumers do), look for a high megapixel count, an on-camera flash, and a large included memory card.

Automatic Exposure Modes
Many consumer camcorders include preset shutter speed and exposure settings that put a window of performance on the shutter speed and the exposure. These presets usually include sports, low light, sun & ski, landscape, spotlight, etc. If you are not familiar with manual control, these modes can be very helpful.

Widescreen
This term characterizes the aspect ratio of 16:9, and comes up in conversation of 16:9 mode often. An aspect ratio is a way of describing the ratio of how long a picture is to how wide it is. In video, the standard aspect ratio is 4:3; that is, 4 inches long for every 3 inches tall. In film, the standard aspect ratio is 16:9. This is why you will sometimes see black bars on the top and bottom of the screen on a movie which has been converted to television. It is because the actual movie is too wide to display on the whole screen. While the television you have at home is likely designed for a 4:3 aspect ratio, many people want that film widescreen look. (Some even have a 16:9 aspect ratio TV.) For this reason, many camcorders include a “widescreen mode.” Some very expensive camcorders can produce images that are truly in the 16:9 ratio; however, most consumer camcorders, because of the 4:3 size of their CCDs (see above), have to approximate the 16:9 ratio using a number of tricks developed by the manufacturers.

LCDs and Viewfinders
LCDs and viewfinders are mechanisms used for playback on the camcorder itself. While almost all consumer camcorders can be plugged into a television for playback, the LCD and viewfinder offer immediate playback of media. Generally, the more pixels on the LCD or viewfinder the better; pixel are given in thousands, such as 123K (123,000 pixels). LCDs and viewfinder size is measured on the diagonal. A 2.5-inch LCD screen will have sides smaller than 2.5 inches.

Focus
An image is in focus when it is crisp and clear to the viewer. Put another was, a focused image occupies the focal point of a lens mechanism. The focal point of a lens system is the point at which all refracting or reflecting light rays from the lens converge, the focal length being the distance from the lens to the focal point. Camcorders usually have automatic and manual focus options. As far as manual focus options go a focus ring is best; however, many of the less expensive consumer camcorders have either jog dial or button manual focus.

Shutter Speed
Shutter speed refers the speed of the opening, or rotation, of the camcorder’s shutter. (Go figure.) Each time the shutter opens, a certain amount of light is admitted to the CCD. Shutter speeds are measured in rotations per second: 1/60, 1/2000, etc. High shutter speeds like 1/2000 admit less light, because the opening in any given amount of time is small. Slow, or low, shutter speeds admit more light as they remain open longer. A low shutter speed recording of a fast object can result in a blurring or trailing effect; a fast shutter can capture moving objects, like athletes, crisply. Diminished light admittance at high shutter speed can be compensated by boosting the exposure / aperture.

Exposure / Aperture
Exposure refers to the exposure of the imager to light. While shutter speed governs the interval of exposure, the iris — more specifically, the aperture — controls the amount of light let in at any given interval. The wider the iris, the bigger the aperture, the smaller the F-stop (the measurement of exposure), and the more light that is let into the lens, resulting in a brighter picture.

Gain
Gain refers to the amplitude or strength of the video signal. On some consumer camcorders, one can boost this signal, increasing the amplitude, or gain. This allows for better low light performance, as the image becomes generally brighter, but it’s often at the expense of clarity, as noise increases as well. Gain is measured in decibels. (0 dB, 6 dB, 18 dB, etc.)

Webcam
Progressive Scan
Some consumer camcorders, especially expensive ones, offer progressive scan options for the capturing of video. There are two different types of scanning: progressive and interlaced. Video is captured in fields of resolution. It is also captured at a certain frame rate (i.e. 30 frames-per-second, etc.). With interlaced scanning, there are two fields of data recorded within each frame. Each field consists of alternating lines of resolution. Once the two fields of alternating lines of resolution are recorded, a frame is said to be created, consisting of two interlocking frames of resolution. The fields of the resulting frame have been recorded in an alternating sequence. Therefore, in playback, one cannot stop and view a single frame and see a clear picture. Rather, when viewing frames recorded with interlaced scanning, you’ll see a flickering between fields, similar to the VCR flicker when pausing a VHS tape. Usually, consumer camcorders record at 60i, which means 60 frames-per-second with interlaced scanning. This is actually 60 fields per second, which when interlocked create 30 frames-per-second.

In progressive scanning, the two fields of resolution that make up each frame are captured together at the same time, sort of similar to film in that a series of still images is recorded in sequence. While a minute of video recorded at 30p (30 frames progressive scan) would contain approximately the same amount of data as a minute of video recorded at 60i, there are slight differences. In general, progressive scanning rates produce motion that is more similar to the way film does, although interlaced scan produces slightly less smooth motion. Both progressive scanning rates of 30p and 24p are available on camcorders. While real 30p is available on some higher-end camcorders, it is often approximated by altering a 60i scan. This is even more true with 24p, however unfortunate.

Many independent filmmakers and video nuts lick their chops over the ability of camcorders to record in 24p. While this option is almost always a result of some sort of processing effect, the resulting capture is said to approximate the look of film. Indeed, many hobbyists desire 24p because of the possibility of eventual video to film transfer. Currently, you can not find true 30p in a camcorder under $3,000.

This page ranks every recent camcorder based on its overall score from the CamcorderInfo.com standardized rubric. This page is an easy way to take a quick glance at the ratings of all the models on the market and how much we liked or didn’t like each one. From the camcorder ratings page, there are links to the full reviews of each model. This list also includes the price of each model and many of the key specs, which are very helpful in making your choice.

Camcorder Reviews Directory Our reviews directory main page includes links to all of our reviews, divided by manufacturer and recording format. This is a great place to start if you know a specific model or manufacturer for which you want to read a review.

Compare Canon BP-827 Camcorders This page allows you to do side-by-side comparisons of the specifications of all the models on the market. You can also rank the camcorders by the low light or video performance scores which they received.

Camcorder Message Boards Want some personal help? Have a question that hasn’t been answered in a review? Confused by something? If you still have questions, you can ask them in our online community, which includes 20,000 members eager to help you pick the right model. Our online community includes over forty different message boards, each dedicated to specific camcorder models. If you have a question about a specific model, you can ask it in that model’s message board. If you have a more general question, you can ask it in our Buying and General message boards. This community is one of the greatest assets of CamcorderInfo.com and is a great resource when shopping for your camcorder.

Price ComparisonsOur price comparisons section is great if you want to skip the reviews and go straight to shopping. It provides real-time pricing information from 30-50 online retailers for each model. You can jump right to the online store of any listed retailer from the price comparisons section.
