There are many retail and fast food chains that sell franchises. This is where someone pays a fee to run one of their stores as their own business. However this person does not have complete autonomy over the business as they need to adhere to the specific business model that is set out by the company. If this is something you are thinking about doing then you need to think about all the positives and negatives of buying a franchise.
There are many advantages to buying into a franchise over setting up a business from scratch. The biggest of these is that the business is already a success. Around 90% of start up businesses fail within the first five years so buying into a business that has already made its name is a very attractive prospect. You do not need to worry about getting your business name out there or creating the right image or product. This has all already been achieved for you.
Start up businesses inevitably have to allow for an amount of loss during the first year. This is due to experimenting to find out what works. This could be the prices or even the products. You also need to think about advertising with your own business which can be very expensive. When franchising this has all already been done for you so you just need to think about making money rather than spending it.
As well as these advantages franchises tend to work out cheaper than starting your own business. You will also find that you are more likely to be able to get credit from the bank as they are more willing to lend to a business that has already proved it is successful. You cannot make those kind of guarantees with a new company as it has no track record.
However, despite all these advantages there are some disadvantages to consider as well. Although this can be seen as an easy way into the business world you still need to have some business or area related experience. The amount required varies depending on the company. The company wants to make sure that you will run the business in the way they want you to.
You also need to bear in mind that the initial fee is not the only one that you need to pay. If you wish to renew your contract when it expires then you may need to pay the same amount again. There is also no guarantee that you will be offered a renewal. It is at the company’s discretion. You may also find that you need to pay a regular amount as an admin fee. These fees remain in place even if your business is not making a profit.
You will also have a lot less freedom than you would if it was your own business. You will be contracted to keep the lay out and decoration of the premises in the style dictated by the company and you will need to sell the goods that come with the brand. You will not be able to experiment with any other products.
If this is something that you are thinking about doing you should take the time to weigh up all the pros and cons to decide if this is the right thing for you.
You can find all the information and details you need to start a franchise fast! When you have a franchise business, you can create the residual income that will give you financial freedom in the future.
