Like the first five areas we covered, these are things which are applicable to any website, whether personal or business oriented; and these all work equally well regardless of the type of business you’re in.

Every Site Needs a Site Map
A website sitemap is a page on the site that contains links to each of the other pages on the site. They can be useful to visitors but they are intended to make it easier for search engine crawlers to index a website and the pages of the website.

Always Have a Robot Text File on Your Site
This is a file which search engines look for and every site needs to have a robots.txt file. This file tells the search engine crawlers (also known as robots, thus the name) what to index and what not to index on your site. Having this file is essential if you’re hoping to achieve a high ranking for your site’s pages.

Niche Directories will Improve Your Rankings
Niche directories are becoming increasingly important to webmasters, since these directories are an easy way to build inbound links to your site. When these links come from a directory whose niche is relevant to your own, these links are by definition more valuable and can help your site to start building its page ranking.

Creating Quality Content
Informational content that is helpful and interesting to your website readers will also influence the search engines and ultimately the ranking of your website. In addition to creating content for your site, submit content articles to article directories on a regular basis. Include a link back to your site. If your article is picked up for syndication or placed on another website, you will have established a link back to your site that extremely helpful to search engine optimization. Even if the article is not syndicated, the presence of the link in the directory where the article was posted has positive results.

Becoming involved in active online forums that are relevant to your websites niche will help you establish yourself as an expert in your field. SEO Networker – Understanding the Basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Part One

No matter what business you are in, or for what purpose you have created a website, search engine optimization, or SEO as it is commonly known, is key to creating a successful website. In order for you to create a website that is picked up by search engines, you will need to understand the importance of “keywords” and how they influence search engines.
Before we get into keywords, let’s first address five basics as to how search engines work.

A common misconception many people have when building a website and developing the content for it, is that search engines pick up the website as a unit. This is not the case. Search engines actually scan and rank individual pages. Therefore, the content on each page should be developed with this in mind. Each page should have a narrow focus using one keyword or keyword phrase. It should have a title, description and keyword meta tags that are unique to that particular page. You can use several keywords together if they are combined in a way that someone might use them to search for your site, but you may want to create a separate page for the combination instead.

It is easy to get caught up in keywords and search engine optimization and forget about your reader. This is a common mistake. You must keep in mind that your visitors and readers are your reason for having the website and if they are interested in what your web site has to say, you will lose them. Be careful not to become so focused on getting your keyword count up that your content becomes uninteresting. A number one ranking for search engines will not do you much good if that is the case.

A website should be optimized for five to ten keywords only. Always include the keywords in your meta tags. If your content is good and supports your keywords you will move up in search engine results and page rankings for the particular keywords.
