Search Engine Optimization, or SEO as it is known, is a method of improving the quality or quantity of traffic that visits one’s website through the organic search engine results. This should not be confused with marketing as organic results are considered to be free or at least unpaid result whereas marketing is usually paid for.

One can look at Search Engine Optimization as a very broad concept. You can quite easily target any type of visitor to a website, but this will not make you any money. By targeting specific visitors who live in a particular region or who are looking for a particular product, service or idea, you can make money through virtually any website.

While it is important to keep SEO separated from other forms of marketing, it is none the less considered to be a marketing technique. While it may not or at least should not cost you anything to do, it is none the less a viable means of marketing your website to a particular crowd of people.

There are many people out there today who are very good at optimizing websites. As a result, many Search Engine Optimization services have been made available in recent years. While you may pay for these services, you are not paying the search engines directly which still constitutes SEO as an unpaid marketing technique.

When you perform SEO on a website, not only should you take into account the actual content of any given pages of a website, but also need to perform necessary changes to the source code of the website itself.

Search Engine Optimization can be split into 3 distinct classifications. These are known as the black, gray and white hat techniques. The white hate techniques are considered to be the honest forms of SEO whereas the black hat techniques are an attempt to fool the search engines into a better ranking. Gray hat techniques make use of a little of both.

In 2005 a group known as AIRWeb, or the Adversarial Information Retrieval on the Web, was established to help set standards for what are acceptable SEO practices. As a result, many aggressive techniques being utilized today are also being sought out and as a result, their traffic through the search engines is being banned until they improve their website honestly.
