Does Facebook Surpass Google Now?

June 30th, 2010

Analysis by Hitwise reveals the popularity of social networks over search engines in certain parts of the world, especially the United Kingdom.

Social networks, Facebook for example, have been competing with web search giants like Google for a few months already. A recent report by Hitwise has brought us the news of Facebook getting more web traffic than Google, which was unprecedented. No one can image the Facebook miracle. Even the Britain would think that it is an American stuff. Nothing to do with them. But now they are tempted by Facebook.

Now, we’ve learned that in the UK, people are visiting social networks more than they’re visiting search engines. Facebook dominates the current crop of social networks, accounting for the majority (55%) of all social site visits. When compared to the wider web, Google gets around 9.3% of all web traffic, while Facebook captures just over 7%. You may think that Facebook is not surpassing, right?

But when UK stats for all search engines were stacked up with data from all social sites, social networks attracted .55% more traffic than search engines. This is a first-time occurrence, but as you can see from the charts below, it’s a trend that’s likely just starting to take off.

Looking at the statistics generated by Alexa, one can easily spot one rising social network. That’s Facebook, many people’s homepage, which rises like a rocket.

While social networks such as Facebook don’t pose an immediate threat to search engines for their core functionality – organizing the web and helping people find content – they do pose a large threat to search engines’ largest revenue source, advertising.

Search engine has been the giant on the web, Yahoo, Google or Bing. Nearly everyone’s homepage is search engine. No one would doubt the power of search engines. But a new era has arrived – Social Networking. Would you start panicking if you were Google? Are search engines really losing?

Couldn’t the popularity of Facebook be as fleeting as a shooting star? Facebook utilizes the most powerful edge of Web 2.0 industry. And Google is doing more and more on more interactive features like Buzz and iGoogle, but seems not quite attractive for heavy users for Facebook.

Would You Break Up Via Facebook?

June 30th, 2010

You know how it hurts if you have once saw the relationship status of your boy/girlfriend changed from “In a Relationship” to “Single”. Statistics show that indirect breaking up on Facebook is now a trend. Perhaps someone on your friend list has already done it before. Worse still, you might have been one of the “victims”.

Out of 4 recently dumped Facebook users, one was informed by a public broadcast on Facebook. Well, it hurts doesn’t it? For those who have encountered such a bad behaviour before, the statistics might actually be comforting.

A dating application named AreYouInterested surveyed 1,000 Facebook uses on its Page. It has found out that many people choose to break the news to their no-longer-beloved partners via the popular social platform.

Almost 25% of respondents found out their own relationship was over by seeing it on Facebook first. This scene has been the catching points of people when they open the news feed. They check friends’ status. More often, many comments and likes. This creates a kind of pressure of disclosing relationship status on Facebook.

About 21% of them admitted they would end a relationship by selecting “Single” in their Relationship Status on Facebook, which is now the “cool” way of saying “I don’t love you anymore. Move!”

Almost 40% of them changed their Relationship Status on Facebook, passive-aggressively telling their former partners that they have made some new plans.

Nearly 35% of the survey takers have made use of the Relationship Status on Facebook, creating an illusion that they have moved on after breakups, even when they have not in reality.

Only 30% of the respondents were female while most of the survey takers were male. How would you interpret the result of the report? Are you going to break up with your woman or man by a change of Relationship Status on Facebook next time you argue? Is it even a decent thing to do? Leave a comment and let us know.
