The Art Of Flying

October 27th, 2010

The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy has this to say about flying. “There is an art or a knack to flying. It lies in throwing oneself at the ground and just missing it”. The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is a science fiction comedy book series written by Douglas Adams in the 70′s.

Flying simply requires the ability to throw yourself forward with all your weight and be willing not to mind that it is going to hurt. Of course it would hurt only if you missed the ground! And most people do fail to miss the ground particularly because they do not intend to do so. The art of flying thus lies in accidentally missing the ground at that correct moment.

If you happen to be momentarily distracted by something as random as a suitcase that you lost on a trip five years ago then you will miss the ground completely and just remain in the air, bobbing a few feet above the ground. This may seem rather comical but it is a very delicate moment. Now you must ignore all consideration of your body weight and float and bob and waft higher.

It is also important at this stage to greet someone or you are distracted and can dive on the floor like Wile E. Coyote in the Roadrunner series. You should also consider the audience you can say you can not fly because the believer can make it all a forehand.

This is of course a fictional guide to flying that has never been performed by stunt people and hence should definitely not be attempted by anyone that has even an ounce of value for their life.

Humans first started thinking about flying after the discovery of the kite in ancient China. Since then many attempts have been made to fly like birds. These included making mechanical wings to resemble the wings of birds. The hang glider which was first made in the early 1800′s was the first such apparatus to aid a human being in flight.

Aviation has come a long way since the invention of the airplane by the Wright brothers. But the planes and all other forms of air transport is still not as exciting as it can be to fly like a bird in the open.

This could be possible through such extreme sports as Sky diving and Hang gliding. But these sports are extremely dangerous and also expensive.

In the Virtual world, you can experience the thrill of flying without any danger to your life. All you have to do is create an avatar and you can guide that avatar to fly in the virtual space by using a few keys on your keyboard. You need not worry about accidentally missing the ground or how much it would hurt if you did miss it.
