Anytime that you grab the car keys from the counter, and hit the road with a plan to go somewhere, reaching that somewhere is your goal. You are in one place on the map, and you need to get to a different place on the map. Hence, you have to come up with a strategy to get to that other place, and accomplish your goal. This is not much different than if you have a goal to make money from home. In order to successfully make money from home, we need to (A) identify where we need to end up; (B) figure out what actions we need to take to get there and; (C) gauge our advancement. This holds true for all goals in life. We will discuss further below.

1) Figure Out Where You Want To End Up

In the example above, prior to jumping in your car and driving off, you needed to know where you were going. Without a specific destination, you are just cruising and wasting gas. Not that there is anything wrong with this from the perspective of driving. I do once in a while to get out of the house. However, if you want to get somewhere specific, you must know how to get there. When setting up your goals, you must know exactly what you want the end result to be. If your goal is to make money from home, get a clear picture in your mind of exactly what that means. If you make $50 per year from home, then you have made money from home. However, if it is your goal to make enough money from home to far exceed your currently salary, you need to visualize the end goal. Picture yourself sitting at your computer and looking at your bank statement online with excitement. Whatever it is, write it down. Write it down just like you would the address to a place you were driving to for the to for the first time.

2) The Route

Of course, if this is a destination which you are familiar with, you need no directions for your route. It is automatic, like putting on your socks, or chewing gum. However, if it is some place new, how do you get there?

So what do we do when we do not know how to get somewhere? We get directions and write them down. We utilize technology such as GPS or Google Maps. Or we go old school and pull out a map. Often times the directions are not stellar, and we have to stop along the way and get more directions. Nonetheless, we do what we have to in order to achieve our end point.

Setting your goal to make money from home is much the same. You get in touch with others who already have already made money from home. You read books, you listen to mp3′s, you attend seminars. You get as much information as possible that will assist you in reaching your goal.

3) Make Sure We Are Going The Right Way

Now that you know where you are going, and you have the directions, it is time to get moving. It is time to jump in the car, and step on the gas. Uh oh, wait a minute. Was I supposed to take Exit 67 or is it Exit 76? Now what do you do when you realize that you might be headed on a tangent? You check the directions again, you pull into a gas station and ask someone, you recalibrate your GPS. One way or the other, you make sure that you get back on track. You do not turn around, go back home, jump into bed, and hide under the covers. If you did this, you would never get anywhere that you had not been before, and your life would be very limited. Even if you have to go all the way back to Point A, you get back on the road and learn from your mistake. Since it was not Exit 76, it must be Exit 67. Eventually you will get to the destination, and it will be worth more the while.

You may get sidetracked on your journey to make money from home. If you do, take care of it just as your would if you were driving. If you get hungry while driving, you simply stop and get something to eat. If you need to use the restroom, you find one and use it. But do you sit in the restroom all day, wondering why you are not where you want to be? Of course not. You take care of business, and you continue on your trek.

All in all, I am simply telling you that if you have a goal to make money from home, only you can keep that goal from being accomplished. There will be speed bumps, red lights, and bumper to bumper traffic. However, this is nothing compared to your goals and what they will mean to you once accomplished. When something falls through and does not go as planned, you are gaining valuable experience. When you anticipated a result several weeks ago, and you are still working hard to achieve that result, it is on the verge of manifesting itself. However, if you get lost, never be ashamed to stop and ask for directions.

Do you work from home? If so, be prepared for the day where you are unable to attend to your business. Of course, I am operating under the assumption that you do not have a crystal ball which can tell you when such a day is coming. Therefore, it is vital that you make preparations to protect your business from events which can potentially put your out of business. Does your home business rely heavily on your computer or the Internet? What is your back up plan if you have to do without either of these for a week? My point is that it is important that we anticipate situations, and are prepared to counteract them should things go wrong.

Below, you will find four things that you can do to prepare yourself should tragedy strike.

1. Work around the events. Your customers will understand, so long as you communicate with them. Let them know up front that things may take a little longer than usual. Keep your customers updated as often as possible. Remember that communication is the key. Most people will understand the delay so long as they are aware of it. If you get to the point where you cannot finish a project, make sure that you inform the customer as soon as you realize this so that they can make other preparations. Do not wait until the last minute to advise them of a potential problem.

If you are struggling with your work from home business because of a child being sick, try and work when your child is sleeping. There is no reason to stress yourself out by working at other times. Make a schedule of what needs to be done, so that you can accomplish as much as possible during these times.

2. Ask for help. As parents, we tend to feel that we should be able to handle everything. Unfortunately, this just is not always the case. There are times when we need to allow ourselves to ask for help. When a tragedy occurs, and you are simply overwhelmed, find someone who you trust and ask them for help. Many times, just having someone reply to customers on your behalf can take the pressure off your shoulders.

Moreover, you can really allow someone to feel good about themselves simply knowing that they were the person that you turned to for help. This shows the individual that you trust them, and lets them know that you view them as being responsible.

3. Long for the best, but be prepared for the worst. We never know what the future holds for us. Thus, you need to be safe, rather than sorry. For instance, if you live in a region which is subject to flooding, be ready for a flood, and do not allow it to put you out of business. If you are in a region which is susceptible to hurricanes, make sure that you are not financially ruined if a hurricane comes through your area. Just make sure that you are ready for anything. After the terrorist attacks, several businesses failed, while others in the same niche market were able to survive. Why do you think this was the case?

4. Put Your Plan Together. At times, events in your life will come about, and you will be unable to completely all of your tasks by yourself. This is when you must have a predetermined system which will allow you to operate quickly and efficiently. Maintain an account of what needs to be done, how often it needs to be done, and mark these tasks as “finished” as you are able to complete them. Put your passwords in a safe and secure compartment. The person who is designated to help you should be someone who you trust and can go through the list and complete tasks if a situation calls you away from your business.

If possible, train someone who you trust to do the things that you do each day. Hence, if or when the unexpected arises, you will be ready.

Realize that when tragedy strikes, it generally does not give any warning signs. However, if you are ready for the worst case scenario, certain stressors can be averted. It is of the utmost importance that the work from home entrepreneur take steps so that the home business will not be harmed in the event of a calamity. Those who take steps to prepare for adverse situations, do not have to stress about their business during such situations.

To keep this from happening, we must “Look and Learn”. “Look and Learn” is when you deliberately try to look for the person or entity which is outperforming you, and learn how they are doing it. This might require that you put your pride to the side for a moment. However, just think of what you are doing as scouting the opponent for the big game.

2. Abandon Your Comfort Zone. I think you know what I am talking about. We all know of things which will make us more successful, but we avoid doing for fear of fear of feeling awkward. The truth is if we can force ourselves to spend some time outside of our comfort zone, not only will this greatly enhance our abilities to earn money online, but we will feel less uncomfortable in such situations. Whether it is mastering a second language, or overcoming the fear of great success, if we are willing to allow ourselves to feel awkward, a new path of opportunities will emerge. Take a moment to ask yourself what is circumventing your ability to earn money online. Learn what you are afraid of. Find out what you need to master.

3. Scribble Notes On Your Hand Like Sara Palin. Actually, you do not need to do this. It really makes no sense. However, if you have something which is constantly reminding you that you need to do something, it will never leave the forefront of your mind. In your case, it is your visions, goals, dreams, and actions which will lead you to earn money online. Never allow yourself to lose sight of these.

As we kept alluding to above, you must keep your forward momentum, even if you have experienced success. To successfully earn money online for the long-term, we must keep up with the market as it will not wait for us.
