Many Faces of Internet Marketing ? Nah, not for most of us this 100 Million dollar piece.

Today, the Telegraph.co.uk had this image on the front page. It’s a picture of Diamien Hirst’s 100 Million dollar lice sized skull plastered ( yes, thats my own terminology ) with 8,601 pieces of near worthless but incredibly hard pieces of glass.

Well, that wasn’t quite accurate, it wasn’t glass – those clear colored pieces really were diamonds but insofar as there are already over a billion pieces of registered white diamond stones, there is little intrinsic value in them.

Does this contrast with what I said above about a 100 Million dollar valuation?

Well, this planet is a study in contrasts, isn’t it?

As are the million and one online courses out there teaching Internet marketing and what it takes to be the next millionaire.

Hopefully, by now, you the reader have already clued in to the fact that a few will become millionaires but not you. Nothing wrong with being realistic particularly about something like internet marketing, but as I get asked often enough, what is the truth – can we make really make money from internet marketing?

So, these 8,300+ online gurus are obviously doing something right concerning their internet marketing, how about you?

For most of us, just getting a second income going would be a nice treat. Don’t you agree?

But what step should that be?

That step depends on who you are, what offline real world talents you already have and what resources in terms of time and assets you wish to throw into the internet marketing mix. Thats not a real answer, right? As in, it didn’t definitively give you a step to take. However, what it did do, other than obfuscating the truth, was to inform you that even the direction of that step is dependent on you individually.

So, looking at the following people, the steps for efficient secondary income are different for differing reasons.

• Retiree with a $60,000 nest egg, can probably afford to invest 15-20 hours a week and 2-4,000 in cash to hopefully break even in month 4 and go on to earn $1500 a month
• Student with precocious internet skills, little life experience and little or no cash.
• Mom at home managing 3 small kids, limited time and limited cash but still looking for a steady 3-500 monthly.

Its easy to see that, each of the above individuals is at a different stage in life and has different resources to throw at the same problem.

Our Retiree – Looking For Another Income

Retiree is likely to have both cash assets and Life Experiences to Pull From.

course, proven online tools and a program with a help desk that can “hand hold” her and guide her through 98% of the process.

There are several long running online courses run by highly reputable groups that take on only 10-20 students at the $3-$5000 level. One or two have fantastic reviews, great existing student testimonials, mature tools for students to use, as well as offshore man hours that are given to the student to ensure that they succeed, etc.

Most of us don’t have $3-%5000 to invest in these “sure thing” type internet marketing courses, but for those that do, this can be a great path to take. My advice to interested retirees of almost any age is to find an internet savvy close family member or someone that you can trust and go in 70/30 with that person but do so only after you have taken a free online course.
As an example of the type of problem an experienced online person can help you through – My sister bought a course for about $600.00 several years ago. She made a mistake while asking them to register the domain name and the wrong one was registered.

She tried for many weeks to get them to reverse this simplistic internet marketing error, not knowing of course that its almost impossible to reverse and that she should have just gone and gotten another one and handed it to the same group to work with.

That idiotic group didn’t bother to tell her a mistake had been made that couldn’t “be unmade” and so she argued with them for many weeks before she gave up. Imagine, had she contacted me, that or any other problem like that could have been resolved in minutes or hours instead of weeks.

This sort of thing is why I would suggest sometimes that if you have both cash and the interest and time, but not the background, then pair yourself with someone who has the technical background to help you around such problems. You can find people like this, willing to help on odesk.com.

The Savvy Student – Abhors the McDonald’s Job and Looking for the second Income.

Our student, who in theory, has all the time in the world ( yes, i know u don’t think so but its almost true ), is best off to start a free online marketing course while doing article writing at either guru.com, rentacoder.com, elance.com or odesk.com ( the last is my fav ).

She or he can conceivably write 500 word articles for $3-30 a piece and work on their own affiliate site while following free online lessons. This path will work. Writing 20 such articles can produce 60-600 dollars that can be re-invested in one’s own niche website.

McDonald’s or a fast food franchise can be a great place to save some money for re-investment purposes, so don’t diss it. Many 3rd world kids would love to be able to start with this and move further.

A few websites like this with a steady $100-150 a month revenue can be flipped on Flippa.com for amounts up to a thousand dollars or more each. It all starts with a step. Yes, just one.

Our Busy Stay At Home Mom

Mom at home trying to earn a bit of spare cash.

Our mom at home, is in the most difficult position because her spare time is at a premium and spare time is what one needs in order to make things work.

Please forget the surveys, most of those simply don’t work or are enriching an affiliate like me at your expense.

Why is she in the most difficult position? Because time is money or can be turned into money and she has very little time. If she is a uni grad and has some existing online skills in research and writing, then she might very efficiently use the same path that younger students use and ghost write for marketing companies and other firms on odesk.com or elancer.com or other places mentioned herein.

When you think you have something to invest, two of the most respected Gurus in the industry are Howard of “Howie’s Apprentice” fame and Gauher Chaudhry.

I have met Gauher and more importantly spent several days with some of his students last year. Some of them who followed Gauher’s courses exactly as he described are averaging about 5-20,000 monthly and working about 60-90 minutes a day.

Others, whom I didn’t meet at the last meeting in Toronto are someties doing over $80,000 monthly. And a few who don’t claim to be Gauher’s students but whom were at Gauher’s Toronto class last year are running their own little empires and making several million monthly. In fact, they are so significant that at many times last year this group of people watching free TV programs, movies etc at TV Shack were more than double the number of people at one of the most popular websites in the world – bbc.co.uk or the venerable american whitehouse which appears intent on closing down the tvshack.net and tvshack.co sites nearly as quickly as they reorganize and get themselves going.

In the graph above, the constant orange line that looks like a heart beat is the venerable ever present bbc.co.uk representing the british broadcasting group who is literally still heard all over the world – most americans wouldn’t really know about this but for those in the commonwealth the BBC is legend, even if some of us dont like it.

It was rumoured that TVShack had paired up with Jersylicious, but the truth is that we simply don’t know how much fact is in that rumour – and perhaps we should encourage you not to repeat that since TVshack is playing hide and go seek at the moment.

Its also heavily rumoured that a someone knows where your favorite tvshack is now hanging out but you have to sign up to get that information because its not just being given to just anyone you know.

How to Shake the money Tree – Make Money Online

Business.ca was one such company. In a rare move, I was even able to get clients for a limousine company, enchantedlimo at the pretty ridiculously cheap price of 2.13 per lead from Google itself ( who if you are in the business of buying direct traffic from Google, tends to be quite expensive ) However, after Gauher, got into the nitty gritty of the seminar it became obvious that my knowledge while foundationally sound, was only 85% of the big picture. And if there is anything that I have learned about this make money online business is that 85 or even 90% doesn’t cut it in competitive areas.

Offline success not always translating online – Make Money Online

I have friends who are making a killing ( 5-6 million pounds annually ) selling a particular widget, but every time they attempt to take that same set of well known widgets into the online format they get to the 85th percentile and due to internal issues simply are unable to get to the 95th percentile where one is firmly in the money. So, it was with quite some interest that I listened as Gauher first went over the well known calculations that almost all make money online marketers understand. These calculations – for the uninitiated – are

• Traffic divided by Signup numbers = pre-Conversion rate
• Pre-Conversion numbers divided by Double optin Rate = Lead Generation Numbers
• Lead Generation Numbers given 100 messages across a 365 day span should convert to 1-3 USD per email value.

So, there is nothing too new to the make money online crowd in that formula. In fact, if I used acrynyms familiar to this genre such as CTR, EPM, CPM etc. the formula could be described far more succinctly. So, as I said, nothing too new in this at all.

Traffic Formula – Make Money Online

The reality of the aforementioned situation is that you spend approximately $100 for lets say 10 cent traffic and get 1000 people to your front door. Perhaps 10% of them convert to your

email list and you lose another 2% to the double optin mechanism. So, now you have a $100 spend and 8% of the 1000 visitors actually get on your email list. You now have 80 people to market to and you hope that sometime in the next year several of them will find your products or affiliate products interesting enough to make you back the $100 that you just spent on them. But if you are an online marketer using google adwords, you know that whats wrong with what I just wrote above is that you are NOT typically going to get 10 cent traffic from Google in the make money online area. The clicks from Google for this market segment are typically 1-9 dollars, not 10 cents. Even though Yahoo advertising ( now Bing ) is cheaper than Google, you will still not typically get 10 cent traffic clicks from any of these 3 search engine giants. But those of us at Gauher’s seminar in the make money online genre or who have taken Gauher’s pay per click or pay per view courses in the past, do know how to get qualified  3-5 cent clicks, so you should have been there. It wouldn’t be fair for people to spend $2-3000 flying in from all over the world to learn all that and have me spill the beans for absolutely nothing in a public blog.

Shock us Twice Over – Make Money Online

It was what Gauher said next that had even experienced big name online marketers in the crowd sitting up straight and paying significant attention. Gauher said, “What if I could show you all how to actually make money while building your list?”

Yes, Gauher said, while building the list, not waiting for several weeks or months afterwards as many of us had been doing. In truth, since I was looking elsewhere at the time this was said, the full import of it was somewhat lost on my poor brain for a few minutes.

The power of the autoresponder – make money online

Gauher, then pointed to Jonathon Von Clute, author of LPGEN2, and asked him to verify if he hadn’t in fact done something similar quite recently. Jonathon took the physical mic and took a few minutes to explain to many of us in the make money online niche, as to how he had done that. In Jonathon’s example, it appeared as if he was actually making more immediate money building the list than he was in paying for the traffic for that created the list.

That’s quite a sweet position to be in since it means that if you can get paid weekly for sales generated on 30% margins you can turn over the initial funds almost 5 times in a month.

Just to be sure that you understand this – Turning over a $1,000 traffic investment at 130% each week for 4 weeks gives you 1000*1.3*1.3*1.3*1.3 or a very healthy $2856 the first month and by month 3, the number is not far from 18,000. Lots of people in our little meeting were turning over more than triple this 18,000 on a monthly basis in the make money online genre.

Between Gauher and Jonathon, they went on to describe a truly virtuous circle where immediate cash to fuel further traffic acquisitions could be recycled. I was there with Craig, ceo of jungle-media. Craig had flown in from england and was enjoying a bit of very nippy Toronto weather, but even his eyes went quite round as Gauher began to explain the tools necessary and the business math behind the madness in this make money online niche.

Universal applicability – Make Money Online

Many of the concepts explained could have been applied to about 90% of the businesses online. A few of them bordered on being either gray hat or something that ninnies would consider to be slightly intrusive, but the results speak for themselves. Long time marketers in the make money online genre have to their intense surprise driven their sales up to 300% higher by using just one of the major technologies explained by Gauher at the seminar.

Several additional concepts were explained in detail and as a hint I can tell you that several of them involved exactly what one did or how one handled the first sets of messages in the autoresponder series. The autoresponder series is the marketing engine and some would say the lifeblood of a “make money online” methodology.

Relationship Building Thru Autoresponders – Make Money Online

For those that dont know what an autoresponder series is, it is a series of email messages that automatically go out to a user who gets on the list. Most of us quickly burn out our lists by attempting to sell to the list prior to building a relationship and there are two very contrasting thoughts about this which I won’t go into here.

I would prefer to give value and build relationships with my list prior to letting them know about the latest set of tools to aid them on their way. If a marketer in the make money online genre comes off as being pushy or simply looking out for their own interests on an ongoing basis, then subscribers slowly drop off the list or stop answering the email. Can A Page Rank without Backlinks ?

In part 1 of this 3 part series, I expounded on the theory that Google, Yahoo, Ask, Bing and others have to walk a pretty polarized line when it comes to what results to show when a user enters a search term.

I am going to call this term, “Seo without backlinking“, my own little terminology which might be easier to the non-technical – “Getting elected without a vote”

Its well known in the political world that “He who has the most votes wins” and the most votes is simply the most people saying “Yea” at the right time. In online parlance, votes are links from other sites and when you win the vote, generally you get shown in the search listings. ( This isn’t 100% true but the world isn’t perfect and this is true enough for this particular example )

Vote Getting Spectrum – Seo without backlinking

What we, who are in the “vote getting spectrum” tend to forget ( all too easily, I’m afraid ) is that Google, Bing and others owe it to the small mom and pop businesses and smaller regional manufacturers to show their sites whenever and wherever it looks like it might be the best fit for a user search. In a perfect world, the site with the most positive votes for queries in that sector should place in the top results on a very frequent basis.

This line becomes difficult for Google and others to balance due to the fact that those of us who know “how to Vote” oftentimes use many hours each day devoted to the automatic voting concept on behalf of our customers. Because of this difficulty, I am proposing that Google and others are already employing algorithms that help rankings via a type of seo without backlinking.

Each seo specialist might deal with 10-20 clients during the year and thus in certain industries or online sectors, thousands of seo specialists may be helping in the vote concept in literally 20,000 or more businesses  who are getting votes that didn’t come naturally.

They simply won’t and this is not in the best interest of the search engines. Where is the Proof ? – Ranking without backlinks

The former article, seo without backlinks, here on this site, ranked in Google, Yahoo and Bing within 3 hours of writing it. When I say, “ranked”, I don’t mean it was merely indexed, I mean it showed up in the top 5 search places within the 3 hours mentioned.

Because this is a blog, it was on the front page of this site, which carries a significant amount of domain trust and it was also on its own page.

Ranking Internationally – Seo without backlinking

So, there is no doubt that a page can rank internationally on all Google Datacenters, Bing and Yahoo, sometimes in minutes and obviously without any of the backlinks that seo specialists love to tell customers that they absolutely must have.

So, again, how really did this happen and what is the mechanism that Google, Bing, Ask and other search engines use to determine what should rank and what should not.

Most of seo professionals are still crying loud and clear the mechanism is backlinks, so lets see how we resolve that.

To get to the heart of how this happened we would need to look at what I said in the former article.  Most small businesses are getting websites now. Hairdressers, gas stations, mechanics, spas, etc. Perhaps as many as one in three or one in five businesses in your town have an internet presence of some sort.

Local Search – Seo without backlinking

If you live in Napanee, Ontario ( which is where  famous girl singer lived ) and you are searching for pizza, what are you most likely to type?

If you have never done this before the following sequence is likely.

• Pizza ( Which will bring back some National brands )
• Pizza, Napanee ( Which will bring Pizza stores in the town )
• Pizza specials, Napanee ( Which might tell you about 2 for 1 specials in your area )

Every pizza store worth its salt that has Napanee anywhere on its website, should show up on this search and some may be advertising 2 for 1 specials if they have any sense ( and others will be dominated by national brands who don’t care to enable their local stores – ha ha )

This same logic applies to hairdressers, repair shops, auto sales etc.

When people search broadly and get the wrong results, they narrow their search.

Searching Google For Fish And Chips

After all, if you are in Oxford looking for a fish and chips shop, do you really want to see national brands or very well seo’d website like the over zealous “mom and pop chippy shop” who hired an seo expert in order to show up all over england, instead of their cozy little place in Wiggan.

More often than not, the answer is you are looking for things to buy or review that are near you.

When you are doing research and want the best answer globally, then Google tends to give you a few choices.

• Highly respected sites that many people have voted for, visit frequently etc.
• A few youtube videos
• Current News Feeds concerning your search phrase
• Images that have text describing your search phrase
• Review sites that are respected based on votes or backlinks
• A bunch of alternate search terms that are similar to what you just typed in

So, now we understand how many of us narrow our search down but that doesn’t really answer the question about how pages on a hairdressers site can rank in the top results of Google, Yahoo or Bing particularly if friends who vote for a page, put a link back from their facebook or twitter account without using the keywords that the hairdresser wants to be ranked on or found for.

Twitter and Facebook, like many other social sites currently use nofollow tags which in theory means that links from these sites dont pass any link love forward, but they might pass domain trust and when or if Google decides to change this, its likely that they won’t be telling us overtly.

But the truth is that mechanisms such as twitter, facebook, linkin, delicious, digg, stumbleon and other social bookmarking sites are the most available methods for the average user to express pleasure or displeasure with a particular site despite possible abuse by seo people.

The truth is: If the regional hairdresser’s site uses

• Unique titles having her town in the title, to describe her services
