Internet Marketing? Have Some Snake Oil, Too

Internet marketing is a sham. It’s a pseudo-industry created by people who want to take your money. That’s it.

Roll your eyes if you want. I sound bitter, yah? But the truth is I’ve watched these kinds of trends come and go over the years, and internet marketing is a classic example of snake oil.

ANYONE – and I mean anyone – can build a web site or have one built for $250 or less. Go to a template site, buy a template and set up your site. Bam, you’re done. Or use a free site like WordPress.com. Or hire someone for $150 to build it. Whatever, you’ll get 90% of what you’d get by paying someone $10,000.

Second, the only thing you need to succeed in internet marketing is decent content. If you can write halfway decently, then you’re totally OK in that department. Can’t write? Don’t want to? Guess what! You can go to Elance.com and hire someone to do that, too.

Think an internet marketing consultant can help you get a top ranking in the search engines? Think again. No one outside of Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! knows what makes a site rank. So paying an ‘expert’ to move you up gets you nothing.

Even if you do hire an expert, and even if they do know what they’re doing, you’re up against competitors who’ve put years into their own sites. You’re not going to beat them in any decent amount of time.

How do you tell the scammers from the real marketers? It’s impossible. Look at 10 internet marketing sites. Bet you can’t tell who’s for real and who’s not.

It’s way too expensive. One guy told me he’d charge me $5000 a month for an SEO campaign (search engine optimization). $5000?!!! I’d have to quintuple my sales to make that pay. Forget it.

But the real kicker was when someone told me that the rules of internet marketing change all the time. E-mail marketing? Worked for a while. Now spam filters and laws prevent you from using it. Search engines? They change their algorithms for ranking so often that an SEO expert told me they have no idea what makes you move up. Nice.

Do yourself a favor: Stop paying for internet marketing. Use the money to improve your own skills and market your business. In the long run, it’s a better investment

How to Create and Deliver Real Value

We are inundated with ads that tell we can make massive amounts of money just sitting on our couch doing nothing but clicking a few buttons and downing our bag of Cheetos. These messages trick so many people into thinking they can get rich without providing anything very valuable. Unfortunately these people get all pumped up to make 457,000 in their first week and never actually take the time to create or provide something valuable and instead create or provide pure drivel, yes that’s right, drivel.

Imagine for a minute (not too many minutes) that you do in fact rush for the big bucks as soon as possible. Inevitably your product or service will lack the mmmph to have any staying power whatsoever, your customers won’t be satisfied and the worst part is that they’ll remember you and your name long after your business is dead gone thereby hampering any future plans you might have.

Then how do you create value?

You must personally have value to create and distribute it. If you haven’t obtained any value then go get it. What do I mean? Gain valuable knowledge and learn valuable skills. Those who have created the best products have in almost every case invested huge amounts of time and energy to reach their goals.

Everywhere you look there are examples of these kinds of people. Some more notable ones are Bill Gates, Tony Robbins, Tim Ferriss, Michael Jordan , Steve Jobs and the list could go on forever. Everyone of them put every ounce of spare energy into realizing their goals and providing the world with something so valuable it was hard for us not to admire and buy their products. They created products so valuable they moved millions and billions of people to take action.

Tangible value is value that people will act on. You can tell if you’ve created substantial tangible value if people change themselves and their routines because of what you’ve produced and not merely an pat on the back or approving nod. Inspire your customers to take action by creating something so valuable there’s no question of if they will buy but when they’ll buy.

So to create tangible value you need to obtain tangible value for yourself. Pick a few interests and find out what the most popular books are on those subjects. Go check them out. See if there are any clubs surrounding those interests or hobbies and join them. Audit some classes at your local college.

The best way to absorb and internalize your the value your gaining is to teach it to others. I would suggest starting a blog where you can write down interesting concepts and insights related to your niche. Make videos demonstrating certain skills. You’ll internalize it more and start building a following at the same time.

CHOOSE A TOPIC NOW

Is it Philosophy? Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn Mandarin Chinese? Have you ever wished you knew more about finance or auto mechanics?Quilting? Scrap booking? Horseback Riding? Glass making? The possibilities are endless. The key is to chose one and dive in.

REMEMBER, the best way to cement your new found knowledge or skill is to teach it to others.

There you have it. You now have something valuable to give to others. If you can teach how to gain to a skill or if you can teach a complex concept to your niche then you’ll start providing real value. All the while you’ll learning more and faster as long as you keep teaching. It becomes clear that legitimate E businesses will take longer to be profitable than is often advertised.

Everyday we see a new business rocket to the top of their industry or more commonly make way too much money for our brains to even comprehend :) what we never see is the preparation, the investment and the nitty gritty blood sweat and tears that go into their products or services before launching. Remember that it will take hard work but as you know the sky is the limit :)

GET GOING! Now is the time to start. Dive into your interest and start teaching! If you already have a lot of knowledge about something start teaching. Start TEACHING TEACHING TEACHING!

Revealed! The 3 Biggest Mistakes People Make When Starting An Internet Business

Do you have a goal of starting an internet business? The advantages are obviousflexibility in time and location, lucrative potential, low startup cost etc etc. While those are all totally valid, they have also resulted in a flood of options and offers out there vying for your attentionand your money.

The resulting flood of business opportunities you could start means you have the difficult task of figuring out which will actually give you a reasonable chance of making any real moneynot easy for anyone without a lot of experience in the industry. To make it even tougher, most of them are not worth your time, money and emotional energy. However, there are a couple good ones, and you can use these 3 guidelines as a start to know what to avoid.

Here are the 3 biggest mistakes people make when starting an internet business:

1. They think its all about the Benjamins. I am fully aware that you cannot operate a business very long that doesnt turn a profit, and believe me, I am all for you making in a month what it used to take you a year to pull in. However, life and business are about a lot more than just money. The sad fact many people learn after they are highly invested in a particular venture is that you can make a lot of money and be totally MISERABLE. The point is to begin with the end in mind. Take the time to investigate what really goes into the business you are looking to build and then seriously consider whether you can find satisfaction doing those activities. Doing this before you start a business can help you avoid a lot of pain, frustration and wasted time in the future.

2. They put too much emphasis on the product. This is probably the biggest rookie mistake I see people make. It makes sense on the surface ” all we need to do is find the next big thing (ie fountain of youth, iphone, Wii etc), it will sell itself, and we can ride the gravy train to our own version of MTV cribs. Not so much. The reality is, I could drop the cure for cancer in most peoples front yard and they would have no clue how to market or promote it. Thats why its FAR more important to evaluate the marketing system you would use and its ability to train someone who has little experience. Aside from your personal ambition, this is the biggest factor determining whether you succeed in starting an internet business.

3. They are lured in by ground floor opportunities and startups. At first glance, this seems pretty logical too. Who wouldnt want to be in on the ground floor of a company that is going to take off!? Unfortunately, once the emotional high of getting in on the ground floor wears off, the vast majority of people are left with a company or product that is gasping for air on the verge of failing. This shouldnt surprise anyone since the vast majority of businesses fail, and the percentage of internet businesses that fail is even higher (think easy come, easy go). What people are really looking for is a company that is on the verge of explosive growth. Its not really that hard to tell if a company is gasping for air or ready to explodeif you know what to look for. This is part of what I cover in my complete home business success checklist (link below).

Starting an internet business can seem like a pretty daunting task, but there are great opportunities for people with little to no experience. However, keep these 3 pitfalls in mind because they are the most common mistakes I see smart people make over and over again.

People often ask me what else they need to know when starting an internet business. Since a lot of the concepts are counter-intuitive to what you think before studying this industry in depth, I put together a checklist of components you will want to make sure you have. Feel free to check them out belowignore them at your own business peril.
