Over more than a decade of marketing experience, I’ve seen my fair share of successful Internet marketing and marketing campaigns. I’ve also seen other campaigns that from the start were deemed as great ideas only to result in total failure. The question I’ve been asking myself as of late is what sets the successful campaigns apart from those that simply do not work. The answer isn’t always simple but the good news is that success leaves clues.
Even though Internet marketing has changed a great deal over the last decade, the basic ideas remain the same. Despite the consistent application of basic marketing principles, many marketers, web site owners, and small businesses do not apply the best techniques for generating profitable campaigns. This is largely due to a belief that newer is better. However, this simply is not true. Rather, a focus on what works is best. Here are some marketing tips that I’ve found to work over and again.
Understand your audience. By having a deep understanding of your market and what’s important to them you can have a significant influence on their buying behavior. A complete understanding of who you’re selling to is of utmost importance if you want to deliver the right message at the right time. Don’t underestimate the power of knowing your audience and what motivates them.
Focus on the offer. A marketing offer is the driving force of marketing promotions that drive results. In fact, testing has proven that the offer is the most significant element for conversion. Focus on your offer if you want to be successful.
Generate split tests. A split test is when you use multiple versions of a marketing piece, measuring the results. This is an effective way to improve overall results of any marketing campaign. This is very important when considering running a campaign for a sustained period of time. Split test for long-term success.
Don’t do everything on your own. The most creative marketing ideas come from working with other creative people. Don’t feel like you need to have all the answers or come up with the next great idea on your own. You may start with an idea, but an open dialog with creative individuals will make it better.
Stay away from discounting. Don’t get caught in the slippery slope of discounting. Once you do, it’s difficult to start charging list price for the same products or services that you offer. As a result, you should definitely consider emphasizing value over price. This allows you to sell for list price while making buyers comfortable with the price they actually pay.
Consistent messaging. Consider the entire user experience before you launch a campaign. From email to website to offer, ask yourself if the prospect having a consistent user experience. If they are, your campaigns stands above ninety-eight percent of others.
Build a relationship after the sale. Don’t drop off your prospects at the door of becoming a client. Once prospects become customers, your marketing needs to build on the relationship you have and continue to add value. By making this investment, you create a strong customer base that can support your business for a very long time.
Test. Test. Test. In addition to split testing, you should consider multiple forms of testing in each marketing discipline. For direct mail, test headlines, offers, copy, time of direct mail drop, etc. Consider testing a life long mission.
Use integrated marketing. You cant rely on one form of marketing to carry your campaigns to certain success. Its somewhat okay to generate most of your leads or sales through PPC marketing for example but what happens when your leads start to decline? Use multiple media sources to meet your goals.
Create your own experience. Many small business owners or website owners read a book and think they’re an expert. Nothing could be further from the truth. The best results I create have always come from learning through my own experiences. As you try new things, you learn what works with your audience and what doesn’t. Nothing can replace the actual experience you get by doing things on your own.
Consider these marketing tips before you start your next campaign. If you want to be truly successful remember to keep things simple and apply what you already know works on a consistent basis. These techniques and tips are applied by successful marketers on a regular. The result is an ever growing success rate of effective marketing.
