Pay Per Click Management Secrets

June 29th, 2009

Pay per click advertising (Google ads) must have caused more elation and sleepless nights than anything else on the web. By employing the right pay per click management program the ‘I wish I were dead’ moments would be far less frequent.

Researching a market, then generating the right keywords, followed by organising the ads and getting the whole account published onto the world wide web is no small task. Paying for clicks before organising a systematic approach to determine how you should bid can lead to a very large hole being burnt into the credit card !

So your ads are on display, but in what position and are you paying too much per click ?

I will now describe my own method for opening the bidding on my keywords, this is the plan I employ successfully with all of my campaigns. This method works – well certainly for me – but I am not claiming that you will make money or that there are not other ways of reaching the same end that you may prefer.

I like to start my ppc campaign with around 100 to 200 ad groups, each containing two ads and just one keyword phrase (minimum two words) in it’s three forms. With two ads, you monitor the ‘click through rate’ of them both so that you can replace the poorest performing one. Your keyword must be the headline of your ad and where it is more than twenty five characters long it will be substituted with a suitable phrase you have ready. Keywords, as I mentioned, can be used in three formats, phrase – “keyword”, exact – [keyword] and broad, which has nothing around it.

For my initial bid I enter two per cent of whatever I make on a sale – what does that mean exactly ? Lets take a situation where my profit on a sale is $30, two per cent of that is sixty cents – my opening bid.

In your adwords account, locate and click on ‘edit campaign settings’. My campaigns are usually targeted at North America, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand so I select those at the bottom of the ‘campaigns settings’ page. Set your ads on ‘rotate’, turn off the ‘content’ and decide on your daily budget. Think very carefully about what you enter here, don’t max out the credit card, start low !

For ads to appear ‘above the fold’ they need to be in positions 1 to 5 usually, but I advise you not to aim for the top two spots, you will pay less and still get plenty of clicks in 3rd, 4th and 5th place. The techniques I use to get my ads in the right positions and at the right cost will be the subject of my next article.

Making good money by advertising using Google Adwords ads is possible but only with the right per per click management strategy.

Learn how to Succeed with PPC Marketing

March 9th, 2009

Ask any real PPC professional, and they will tell you that the #1 key to being successful with pay per click marketing is split-testing.

The reason why is that without testing everything having to do with your campaign, you are destined for failure. Not only do you need to optimize your PPC text ads, but you also need to make sure your bid prices are being optimized.

Changing just one word in an ad can increase click through rates by more than 400%. Not only that but changing punctuation can have an even greater effect. Landing pages can be optimized too! Shifting parts of your site, changing colors, and changing images will all change the conversion rate of your website. You need to find what changes the conversion and click-through rates for the better.

To be successful, you have to test all the time. As soon as one test is done, you need to move on and test the same thing again.

One of the best ways we know of to split-test is by using what is called the Chi-Square formula. The Chi-Square formula gives you a mathematical breakdown as to the significance of a certain test. Once we know that test results are relevant, we can then move on and continue to test.

Using the Chi-Square formula, we can make sure that our tests are a minimum of 95% accurate. There are software programs to do this, but it is beyond the scope of this article.

An example of this is if I were to play Doyle Brunson in a game of heads up poker, there is a small chance that I might beat him once or maybe even a few times. However, if Doyle Brunson and I were to play 100 matches of heads up poker, it is highly unlikely that I would beat him more times than he beat me.

This goes to show you how important it is to have more than just a few pieces of information before making a conclusive decision.

It is harder than you think to find a PPC management company that knows what they are doing. A lot of the so-called “Professional Agencies” have literally no idea what they are doing, and do next to no split-testing at all. Don’t fall into one of their money traps, and make sure you know what you are getting before you get management for your PPC account.

Email Marketing and The Mailing List

January 30th, 2009

We all know that every aspect of Internet marketing has a specific tool that helps to drive traffic and sales, and any email marketing campaign is no different. What you need to concentrate on here is developing and building up a mailing list since that is the real cornerstone of any successful email marketing campaign. Remember that there is no denying the power of a well run email marketing campaign and with that in mind there are specific things you can do to ensure that your mailing list is strong and healthy.

Offer Something For Free

One of the oldest advertising gimmicks in the book is still one of the more effective. Its important to keep in mind that you really want your mailing list to have opt in clients. Those are the people that are much more likely to read what youve got for them, and offering this kind of incentive will push them to sign up. One of the more effective techniques is to get a content writer to write a free ebook and then offer the use of it as a bonus for signing on.

Contests

People love to be included in interactive events. Sponsoring a contest on your site draws people in to sign. There is one drawback that youll need to be aware of if you travel this route. Not everyone who subscribes in this manner will eventually convert into a sale. Many of the people that you attract this way will be people habitually playing all the contests looking for the latest freebie.

Article Marketing

This is one of the most tried and tested methods used today. Hiring a ghost writer who will work for a reasonable fee all but ensures that youll get a series of professional articles submitted that cant help but eventually build your mailing list.

Directories

Again, this is one of the more traditional but effective methods used on the Internet. Business Directories are a great way of getting your name out there in cyberspace so that you can draw the kind of attention that will help to build your mailing list in the end.

Of course there are other methods that include ad swaps and hover ads, but the major point here is that you want to have people subscribe to your mailing list. That way, youll already have their willing attention and the buildup on your mailing list will result in a solid email marketing campaign.

What To Avoid When Yourre Starting Out

January 30th, 2009

No matter how well versed you are in the brick and mortar business world, its a good idea to understand both the similarities and differences between that and the world of ecommerce. Remember that as the economy takes a downturn, more and more people are looking toward alternatives to the traditional model of doing business. However, while the Internet supplies some great ideas and is a great vehicle to make money, there are at least four mistakes that you want to avoid before you take the plunge into starting your own business.

Dont Rush

First and foremost, all the experts agree that you dont want to rush. Although compared to other enterprises an Internet business is cheaper, there are quite a few bad turns that you can take and some of these spiral. While its true that we all like to hear great success stories and how people have made great money online, you need to be careful and find out exactly how much work was involved. Take the time to look into exactly how this success was achieved before you envision yourself doing the same thing.

Think Like A Boss

Remember too that while the Internet affords great possibilities, theres also a tendency for people to slide into the employee frame of mind. That means that some people make the incorrect assumption having your own business means that they have more freedom and while thats true, you also need to in mind that although you can set your own hours you still need to work at them. Dont think like an employee when youre the boss.

Get The Right Tools

Many people starting a home based web business try to cut corners and get a quick template off the Internet rather than taking the time and investing the money to go to a professional web design company in Los Angeles or where ever they happen to be. That is always a mistake. Even if you wind up with a decent website, you need to market that site and compete for page rankings and you dont get those tools by cutting financial corners before you even start.

Theres a good living on the Internet, but you need to get the best tools and have the right aptitude to make the whole thing work for you. While the medium for business might change, the need for hard work stays the same.
