Search Engine Optimisation Hype Log

February 26th, 2010

There is so much hype within the Search engine optimization industry probably because it is a techno field plus is very competitive so everyone is attempting to eyebrow everyone else and get the upper edge.

Being in my antiquated 40\’s – hippy 1965 baby to be exact – I have been around the IT industry well before most of the current players were out of diapers. I was there in our computer room when they unveiled the latest hard drive – it looked like a modern day top-loader washer and was the same size! All up it held a \’breath-taking\’ 40 Meg of data. Yes that is right 40 Meg! When we saw the new micro PC\’s come out we felt they would never take off (we must have had IBM blood in us!) and the IT journey went on from there.

Today my \’long teeth\’ dip in my beer and my eyeballs roll back in their sockets when I hear some of the hype plastered around the Search engine optimisation playing field.

Yes Search engine optimisation can be technical but only usually while you got it drastically wrong at the start – your website that is. If you did not hire an SEO advisor to provide you with the rundown BEFORE you started building then you most definitely wound up with a site punctured with a million Search engine optimisation holes. These websites can take some fixing without a doubt. Most web designers know nothing about Search engine optimization and what they do know they almost never put into action due to the fact they aren\’t requested to by you! Not employing a great SEO consultant is like creating a three storey home without using an architect and engineer and expecting the builder to get it right – no way.

I come across a great Search engine optimization site once in every 100 web sites. This is a poor track record for web-developers. Almost every other single website is a ship full of holes sinking in the lower regions of page 196 of Google!

So aside from adding some vibrant pros to this piece I guess I should add some substance. Well here it is – short and simple (well maybe not that short!)

Content is King

Google makes use of backlinks a lot at the moment to judge a sites popularity. However, it is now super easy to produce inbound links of good quality in large amounts to unbalance the ranking game. Google knows it has to find a way to balance this out. When it does, most people\’s ranking will come crashing towards the ground overnight.

On the other hand, Google always wants High quality content – the best it can show. Should you have this, then because content is the only reason why we have search engines in the first place, your site will usually flourish no matter what twists and turns Google puts its search engine algorithms through.

Under no circumstances ever forget that content rules inside the SEO jungle. Forget at your peril.

We battled to get content on customers internet sites for so long until we built it into our Search engine optimisation ranking packages. We now offer a content and back-linking service (SEO.SIMPLE.) that solves this inherent problem. Now our clients get fresh unique content on their websites weekly and gain ranking results from it seeing it is Search engine optimisation optimised as well.

Your content delivery engines needs to be well tuned

Don\’t imagine that you can easily just add content to a web site and miss out on the platform you are adding it to. Google wants to be sure that the content material is not only the best for the keyword and key phrase requested, but it also offers the best user experience. So ensure you cross your T\’s and dot your SEO eyes when it comes to ensuring your site provides the very best experience such as doing these :

Ensure your server is fast – Google recently added this one – upgrade today if it takes too long to download your web pages

Make certain ALL images have ALT tags WITH meaningful content

Make sure every page has a UNIQUE page title relevant to the content of the page

Fix Canonical issues (were http://www.yoursite.com and http://yoursite.com and http://www.yoursite.com/index.php etc all resolve to the same page but have different addresses. Instead they should all redirect to a single page and that page should be utilised throughout the site in all links. If you are on a UNIX based server this can be fixed quickly usually through the htaccess file)

Make sure there are a minimum of 300 words of meaningful textual content on any page – the more the better for Google

Make sure that if you are using a Website cms that the URL\’s are fixed so only words show up (and preferably keywords) and not funny programming expressions and numbers

Whenever you create a link use a keyword(s) and not the notorious \’click here\’ as the anchor text

If you cannot add content to your website (maybe you have a flash site), then at the very least add a weblog attached to your internet site – this helps a great deal

When you next renew your domain, renew for at least three years – of course longevity exhibits maturity and increases trust

Inbound links and more back links

And of course do not cease back-linking. Right now it\’s the powerhouse for Search engine optimization but don\’t rely on this for the future.

So I hope this has helped \’de-hype\’ some of the SEO materials out there and helped you along the Search engine optimization highway a little bit further.

What is SEO?

February 20th, 2010

Hundreds of thousands of results will be displayed on searching for a well known topic on any search engine. In such a scenario, how a website manages to feature among the top results of a search for a specific keyword is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. The reason behind the growing popularity of SEO in last few years is that the presence of the website in top search results aids in getting more visitors to it, which very often converts into more business.

There are two kinds of SEO – white hat and black hat. Black hat means use of techniques, which are usually not approved of, for making a site feature in top results. On the other hand, white hat SEO works within the framework laid down by the search engines and focuses on using widely accepted techniques.

With the purpose to understand the significance of a web page for a specific keyword, search engines traditionally used the page\’s Meta data, which is inserted into the code of the page by website managers or developers. However, nowadays most search engines make use of highly sophisticated algorithms, involving the use of more than 200 different factors to decide on the results.

SEO professionals have to be aware of all the new developments made by search engines and find out the relative weight of each of the factors in a search algorithm. On the basis of these findings, they improve the SEO techniques used by their customers so that their websites remain competitive. When the search results were exclusively dependent on Meta data and the content of the web page, this task involved optimizing the Meta tags of the web pages and ensuring that the keyword density of each page was just appropriate.

In spite of the continued significance of the onsite aspects, the search engines now put a greater stress on how popular a page is. The popularity of a particular web page is determined by the number of other pages linking to it. Each link is hence seen as a vote for the page and the system becomes democratic in nature. Because of this major change, SEO now also entails a lot of offsite strategies like distributing free content to get inbound links, and creating an extended presence through blogs and other forms of social media.

The most important factor to remember about SEO is that it is not static. SEO strategies are constantly trying to adapt to the changes occurring in the field of online search. That is the reason why it is so critical to engage an experienced SEO consultant to assist you.

Three Seo Tips To Make A Difference

January 31st, 2010

Sometimes it\’s just the tiniest of things that can make a Extended difference with SEO ranking results.

Here are three little things that will make a Tremendous difference if you utilize them all the time.

1. If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.

2. Title is everything.

3. Being bold makes you stand out.

If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.

When it comes to a more conventional world like SEO sometimes we forget common sense. So let\’s remember!

In the SEO world making sure there are fish is making sure that there is traffic for a keyword we are choosing to rank for. Use tools like Google Traffic Estimator (just Google it) if you are short on funds, and if you have a little bit of money, go get yourself a WordTracker account (they also have a free tool as well which is good). These (and many other traffic tools) will tell you that there are \’fish\’ for the keywords that you want to rank for.

The next part of the tip is not to fish were everyone else is fishing! This makes logical sense but often forget that it\’s best to fish were there is little or no competition! So look for keywords that not may people have content written for but a lot of people are looking for.

Page title is everything.

In the SEO universe the page title is the \’secret weapon\’ of the top ranker! Here is 1 thing to remember, make sure that the page title is as close as possible to being 100% the keyword you want to rank for as possible. The page title is like the title of a book. If you wanted to learn about the sex life of a worm then a book title of \’Sex life of a worm\’ will grab your attention and you will know you have the book you want. On the other hand a title of \’Worms and interesting facts\’ will not grab you in the same way. The trick is to make your page titles 100% of the keyword you want to rank for. If you add \’clutter\’ words then you are diluting the most important SEO element – like diluting a single malt whiskey with water or ice.

Being bold makes you stand out.

This is a very good onsite optimization tip if you want to optimize a page/blog entry for a specific keyword, make sure you embolden the keyword in the text 2 or 3 times. Do not try to over do it of course! More is not usually better in the SEO world.

One Stop Search Engine Optimisation Tip

November 17th, 2009

There are two types of SEO, onsite and offsite. Onsite involves optimizing your website to make it search engine friendly. By changing your local site and adding special SEO components you can attract better results, and sometimes great results from search engines like Google.

You can get very good results with just onsite optimization on its own but the effects tend to be unstable and not effective continuing. To get top results you will need to do a lot off offsite optimisation as well.

Top onsite SEO tip: change the page title

Believe it or not the changing the page title is one of the most powerful onsite optimization techniques you can do. The page title is what appears at the top of a browser on the left hand side. Visitors to your web site will not usually take much notice of your page title because it is not shown on your page. However, search engines take a lot of notice of the page title.

If you have never seen what a <title></title> tag looks like within an HTML page then simple open up the page source and take a look at the top of the page. To view the page souce, the simplest way is to right click on the page and select view source.

You will find the page title inside the <title></title> tags usually within the first few lines of the HTML code. This is an instance of an HTML title tag : <title>This is my page title</title>.

Search engines are very focused on page titles because it is like the title of a book – it tells you what is inside. By paying close attention to the page title you can move your ranking up considerably. The other day we could not get a client to rank for a specific keyword – we had overlooked adding this into the title (we are ranking clients for many keywords) and then the next day after we got the page reindexed by Google they moved from the second page to the first.

The trick is not to dilute your page title with additional non-keywords. Do not add words like in and the, and other filler words. The closer you can get to the pure keywords the better.

For example, avoid doing this: <title>Earth Worms in the Middle East</title> when your keyword is earth worms. Alternatively simply use: <title>Earth Worms</title>.

If you have multiple keywords only use 2 or three uttermost or again the focus is diluted. If you are using multiple keywords then do it like this: <title>Earth worms | Middle East</title> – never use filler words like ‘in’ and ‘the’.

Tips On How To Choose A Good SEO Trainer

October 23rd, 2009

SEO is a very specialized sphere of net marketing. It’s a combination of so many skill arenas. An effective SEO company will have a extended range of SEO skills within its team so that it can tackle the numerous issues that they will face in ranking a site on Google and other search engines.

However, training is very distinct. Someone that is great at getting results may not be effective at passing on to others how they can get results.

Many SEO trainers are hands on SEO optimizers and they do not have a professional IT training background.

Here are 5 points to take note of when engaging a great SEO training business.

ONE:

Ask the SEO company if their trainers are SEO professionals as well as fully fledged IT trainers. Do they have the ability, experience and skill to deal with people in a classroom situation so that the trainees can fully benefit from their SEO skills?

TWO:

Does the SEO trainer have working hands-on experience of ranking many different types of websites on Google, Yahoo and MSN – can they show you the results! Or is the trainer a book teacher – they learnt from a book all the theories but have not learnt the hard cold facts about SEO in the SEO ‘jungle’. Will they be able to fetch to the table the help skills to solve YOUR problems on YOUR website? It’s a simple issue of asking.

THREE:

What technical scope does your SEO trainer have? Have they a comprehensive web development background so that they can deal all the core areas that they need to help you rank and learn about ranking your website. A top flight SEO expert teacher should have 2+ years’ web development skills in both HTML and programming languages combines as a minimum.

FOUR:

Does the training come with any followup support? Like all training – on the day everything is easy – yet after the course when you get back the story is different! What after training support is offered by the SEO training company in writing so that you know you will be able to integrate your training effectively.

FIVE:

What is the company’s current ranking on Google? Have you checked what their current ranking is for keywords like SEO, SEO training, SEO services etc? If they are not on the first page or the top of the 2nd page in the local Google site then maybe they are doing training too early before they have established themselves properly. So go check their rankings right away or just ask them!
