Wordpress 101 – What Is Wordpress And How Does It Work?

March 17th, 2010

So you are ready to start a website but not too confident about the format to be selected out of the many available. Chances are that you have heard about it as a blogging platform only, but you can put it to several uses, other than just for blogs. You could create a website or CMS (Content Management System) using Wordpress and its many benefits are as follows:

Having fantastico in the domain control panel would add to the convenience of setting up Wordpress and it is just a matter of a few clicks and your website is ready and functional. Manual set up can be done easily if you do not have fantastico as this takes little time if you just go by what they ask you to do. In case you feel awkward with both these options, get some one to do it for you. This is a very affordable job and not time consuming, especially for someone who has the right experience.

Updating a traditional website that was built by someone else can be costly to the site owner because you have to not only pay a designer but you also have the wait while they get back to you and actually get it done. Using a system like Wordpress makes sense since it is very convenient to use and simple to learn. You could update your own site yourself and you do not have to waste time waiting for the designer to show up.

A very big advantage of Wordpress is that any website renovation with changes and updates can be outsourced without any problem. All you need is a virtual assistant with a separate username and password which she uses to log on and work on your site. You do not have to worry if you have the latest version of the site up, or whether you are overwriting the work done by some other person.

A great feature of Wordpress is the use of in-built Categories and Archives section.

Websites which are updated often are great favorites with search engines. It is highly likely that Wordpress and the nature of blogs would make you revamp your site often and this could mean high search engine rankings for your sites. The ranking of your site gets an upward raise when you are found even by the blog search engines.

When you create a website using Wordpress you also get a RSS feed as part of the service. Your customers and other visitors can easily subscribe to your RSS feed and be aware of any new additions to your website.

This is a very successful way to make your site popular with increasing the number of people coming back for more knowledge and solutions. What should give you just a few ideas on how you can start using Wordpress to create a website that draws in more traffic and makes your life easier.

Creating World Class Blog Templates

March 14th, 2010

Blogging is on the rise across the web with a whole host of informative, opinionated, quirky and quite often hilarious blogs cropping up to provide a uniquely individual place for people’s thoughts. In amongst this sea of new content, it’s more important than ever before to use eye catching blog templates to make your blog stand out from the crowd!

The Web 2.0 is revolutionizing the way we create and access content, making possible the kind of democratization that the web’s founders could only imagine. To get your voice heard in the blogosphere, as well as creating killer content, it’s important that you brand your blog to make it accessible while at the same time helping it to stand up and get noticed in an increasingly crowded room.

The first thing to do is decide on the type of blog you’re looking to establish and adapt your layout for the content. For example, news blogs and those boasting political commentary are very often styled around traditional print media simply because those styles have worked for so long and have proved popular with readers.

Magazines and papers have spent a long time honing their styles to the particular demands of their readers’ eyes and attention spans, so if you feel your content needs to convey a certain gravitas, don’t be ashamed to borrow a few ideas from the professionals.

On the other hand, if you’re putting together a particularly personal blog, you’ll want to really make it your own. Think about a snappy tagline, header and footer which will ‘brand’ your page, and don’t be afraid to experiment with a few different templates when you start out; react to feedback and remember that your readers are your masters!

One tip that applies across the board is to avoid any crowded background images. Don’t layer text on a family photograph for instance, or layer red text on a picture of a sunset! Think about what would actually be enjoyable to look it. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so don’t be afraid to copy and adapt styles from some of your favourite blogs. Often, other people’s ideas work for a very basic reason: they are simply attractive and effective.

There’s nothing wrong, for example, with using pre-existing blog templates, rather than getting into a mess with tricky HTML. You’ll notice that many blogs have a very similar style; legibility, memorability and the quality of your content should be what really counts. Anything else is superfluous; if you do it right you’ll reap the benefits and if you get it wrong, your blog could bomb!

If you bear the golden rules in mind, and provided you’ve got something interesting to share, you shouldn’t have too many problems in creating a blog that’s both approachable and uniquely yours. Blog templates are flexible and fully customisable, so play around and see what works and what doesn’t. Have fun, experiment and think at all times about the people you’re aiming for and your blog’ll go far!

A Brief Note Regarding Builder Theme Review For Users

March 7th, 2010

Most people use the free Wordpress system to build their blogs and websites. The system is easy to use and a person can get up and running fairly quickly. This Builder Theme review is going to talk a little about how great this tool is for taking your Wordpress website or blog to the next level and creating the kind of unique and distinctive look that will give you the brand recognition you want.

The group that built the Builder have been dedicated to creating products to make Wordpress a more useful tool for people. If you have set up a website or blog in Wordpress, you have already experienced the inflexibility of the themes that are provided by the system.

Many people who begin their blogs and websites on Wordpress eventually get frustrated when they can’t get out of the “theme” box and start making their own decisions about color, design and layout. Most of these people wind up paying for a more flexible system that they have some control over.

There are some great things about this program. It’s very easy to navigate, has some great tutorials, and there is always a video on the website that can give you tips and tricks for making things function more effectively. But, the program is really secondary to the team that build the program. We all know that a program is only as good as the people who stand behind it. Being able to watch Chris, one of the builders, go through each part of the program and explain how to move things or create something is really great.

I’m not a programmer or a “designer”. I am a person who wants to be able to tweak Wordpress and not be forced to use a theme that I’m not 100% happy with. I needed something, a tool, that would give me the power to make my own designs, change colors, move widgets or choose a different theme.

I was able to build a five page website that had all the bells and whistles in about a half hour. This included the time that I played with different attributes and checked out some extra features. The cool thing about Builder is that you get a thumb nail that shows the result of each change and you can see each change you have done without having to publish the site to see it.

Then there is the iThemes team. If I have a question, suggestion, or problem, there is somebody there who can help. The whole group is familiar with all of the intricacies of Builder and Wordpress and can walk me through any issue easily. This is such a nice change from some programs I have purchased and then been unable to get any kind of support for.

I’ve used a lot of design programs, but I honestly have not seen one like this. The Theme Builder review was completed by playing with it, creating a website and blog, and clicking each button to see what would happen. Followed by calling and getting assistance for how to get out of the mess that I had gotten myself into clicking every button. For me, the program and its quality is important, but the people that build it and support it have the same level of importance. I am totally happy with this product and highly recommend it.
